D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

Filled out my survey. Mostly green, some yellow in places. No red. Hopefully this Psion finally breaks through.

They could also just make 10 backgrounds that aren’t “backgrounds” in the traditional sense. Instead of Solider and Hermit and Merchant they could have “Backgrounds” like “Pyrokinetic” or “Empathetic” etc etc. Backgrounds in some settings don’t have to be jobs. As you said, rules are only true...

We don’t think you’re crazy because Psionics don’t fit in FR. We think you’re crazy because there is simply no way for them to playtest a full class in time for a 2025 release. This isn’t a subclass where you can make minor tweaks and throw it in, this is a full base class they have to get...

The panel you linked is called “the Future of the Forgotten Realms” and specifically says it will talk about what is to come for the setting in 2025. So unless the October surprise or the Psion are going to be Forgotten Realms related, this panel isn’t likely covering them.

The only GenCon panel they have announced is focused on the Forgotten Realms books and on Third Party content for D&D Beyond. But they do usually do a press event the Wednesday before for some announcements.

Now we just need a Wis and Int weird caster to complete the sets.

Except you can’t take more than one of those feats. Wild Talents are one offs, you can’t take one if you have one.

They (kinda) exist in 5e already. In Rime of the Frost Maiden.

That only applies to game mechanics, not to lore. Nothing in the Spellcasting mechanics says it’s contingent on the weave existing in a setting. Spellcasting works, the weave is for the Forgotten Realms. Not D&D as a whole.

I’m voting Green now and making 1000 bot accounts to vote green just to spite this post.

Yes, but that is very unfun for players. If your party is kidnapped, you want to be awake and able to try and overcome challenges. Including a Psion makes these effectively mute points, unless you treat them the same way you treat mages. If you have to knock out a character just to counter...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

You got a laugh out of me for the Counterspell sign 😂 I think it would be just as easy saying Somatic components for a Psion can manifest as a hand to your temple, reaching out towards an object, or a glowing halo appearing around your head. A sidebar like this, similar to the explainer for the...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

You misunderstand my stance here. Yes, it’s obvious that spellcasters are casting spells in the game. That’s because of the components. Verbal, Somatic, and Material components reveal a caster as casting a spell. That’s spelled out in the rules. If you remove those, like with Subtle Spell meta...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

You thinking this and it being true about the rules aren’t the same thing. Nothing about any of those skills work with identifying a spell, which are rules laid out in Xanathar’s. In Xanathar’s, the rules clearly say people can perceive the casting of a spell only if it has a Verbal, Somatic...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

A majority of the Material components necessary for casting Psionic spells are just a jewel or pearl or dust from a jewel or something. So it’s not that hard to flavor them into focusing crystals of the same value anyway. It’s not like you’re turning the eye of a newt into a crystal thing, it’s...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

This also isn’t correct, as there’s even rules in Xanathar’s about how to identify a spell being cast. The target does not inherently know anything about the spell unless the spell says they know. The way characters know a spell is being cast is because of the verbal, somatic, and material...

Encumbrance rules are still in the 2024 PHB dude. They didn’t drop anything. If WotC dropped every rule that most people ignored, we’d be doing improve with no ruleset to speak of. Every rule gets ignored now and then. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t exist.

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

No it can’t. If the lore is secret, the DM has no obligation to reveal it to a history check, even if they rolled a 30. History is about what your character can reasonably know. If the secret isn’t known to anyone, you can’t magically learn it through a skill check. Any DM allowing that is doing...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

That is not how it will end up working. What will happen is everyone will spam their highest level spells, end fights quickly because everyone is throwing around multiple level 9 spells, then short rest and do it again immediately after. It isn’t self-balancing, it’s just exploitative.

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

So you’re saying you could “nova” by casting two level 9 spells, then short rest and cast them again next combat? When combats last 3 turns on average? Ya, that certainly puts a damper on the power scaling issue /s.
