What treasure do you wish was in upcoming adventures?

I would be happier if there were less magic items, but that the ones that are awarded are more aligned with the party that finds it. At the end of a major part of the plot...Captain Bob awards your group 1 item from the list... a. Cloak of elvenkind b. A +1 melee weapon of your choice. c. A...

When and how do you tell a DM he is possibly in error?

Somewhere on page 1, someone did get pretty condescending with the snowflake comment. Didn't sit well with me. Thats a bit over the line IMO, and he clearly noticed the slight because the OP repeated used the same terminology later. The OP was not the one who should apologize. On the...

That player in the back of the room

Seems like such an odd situation. I am curious about what he gains by acting in such a specific way. Does he have an unresolved conflict with one of the players? Is he just acting like a dick on purpose?

That player in the back of the room

My general assumption is that GMs are neither bad nor good until I play with them. All that stuff is generally applicable. In my experience, I am willing to put up with most of your typical GM flaws/eccentricities, just because they are willing to DM for me and I like to play. But there are...

First legal 3rd party AL material announced

Considering how disastrously BMG handled GenCon last year...I will be super careful to research anything with their name on it before I buy it.

Requesting Death House help - SPOILERS AHEAD - DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE NOT DMING

The children at the beginning are not illusions. They are flesh and blood, created by the House to lure the PCs in. They are supposed to act genuine in their fear because they don't know they are dead. The ghosts upstairs are their actual spirits and they know they are dead.

    Necromancy and AL

Barovia is full of undead...that constantly terrorize and kill people. It would end up about the same as if a guy was walking through town shooting guns at random targets. Most people would flee, while the ones who can fight are probably going to put him down ASAP and ask questions later...

That player in the back of the room

The DM is supposed to contrive to attack and challenge -ALL- of the characters. If all you do is make every monster swing at the closest thing you are doing it wrong. Heck, many of the encounters require you to play them poorly to not cause instant TPKs(season 1 assasins, season 2 necromancer)...

That player in the back of the room

Pauper...why do you think it is bullying if a DM causes a character to die? If multiple players are already approaching the DM expressing frustration then it is already in the realm of disruptive play. If you have 5 people all playing the game that most of us do (most xp comes from winning...

That player in the back of the room

Kind of a prickly pear situation. There is no perfect answer. Clearly playstyles do not match, so you either side with the single player, or side with the 'rest' of the table. Me personally, I would try to cut the baby in half, because I am a mediator by nature. I am loathe to alienate any...

Exactly how important is it to start the game with a +3 ability score modifier?

I see it differently. Normal characters have a +3, even most pregens. That translates to +5 to hit. A player who starts with a +2 instead is 20% worse than the other guys in the -main- thing that matters ie damaging the bad guys. You are effectively 4 levels behind everyone in terms of...

SPOILERS - Curse of Strahd Play Report

My table finished Death House on their third session. Despite the difficulty of keeping a table of 7 on task, they managed to find every secret door, and every piece of treasure in the house. I did skip the 4 Ghouls encounter. I know, I know, bad DM! But the ghasts and mimic both did a lot...

D&D 5E Curse of Strahd: Travel time in Barovia (minor spoilers)

Not to mention it should be hard to get anywhere without having 2 encounters every 12 hours. Night time travel is probably a big no-no too...well unless they are suicidal.

    firm rulings

Technically, if you are using weapon attacks, then your 'free' object interaction is being used on the weapon you used. I can see plenty of DMs deciding that on the spot. I've seen plenty DMs rule that if you spent your turn opening a door you couldnt attack because your weapon had to be...

D&D 5E What is the point of material components when Wish exists?

Awee...a theoretical thread where both Simulacrum and Wish got discussed and nobody pointed out the infinite Wish loop. I am disappointed.

Have we failed to discourage min-maxing?

If they wanted to, they could make it EASY for players to decide to play a 'face'. Once or twice in an adventure, have the party gets a basic quest reward(potions of healing), but a high charisma check lets the party pick from a list of magic items instead...say a +1 weapon, boots of elven...

Have we failed to discourage min-maxing?

This kinda reminds me of the way I tend to 'decide' to hand the players free information when I think they need it. Particularly disparate plot lines like the Mirabar delegation in season 2 are troublesome. The adventure is taking place over several months of real life time, and the details...

    DDAL Racism and DDAL4-1 [Spoilers]

Is anyone who is part of this discussion actually a part of the culture we are talking about? The reason I ask is because I think MOST people are ignorant about the issue. The issue to me is not that 4-1 uses stereotypes. Fantasy lore in general is FULL of stereotypes. The core rules...
