With the kind of staff turnover WotC has, it wouldn't surprise me if the people who were against portraying slavery in D&D are long gone, and the current team is more willing to experiment with edgy topics.

Larian didn't work for WotC though. I doubt that WotC gained any automatic rights to all the IP in BG3, game engines are far too valuable for that. Any IP transfer in the license contract was probably restricted to characters and lore.

I genuinely don't think it's healthy to engage with content you intensely dislike. Better to focus on the stuff you love instead of what you hate.

That depends entirely on how many rests the party takes. A Battlemaster archer who uses Action Surge and Precision Attack to turn Sharpshooter misses to hits will outdamage the Ranger by so much that it's not funny.

I believe that's how Rule 34, started, but people couldn't help themselves from filling out the rest of the list.

Garbage archers? A Battlemaster fighter with Sharpshooter and Precision Attack is possibly the best archer build in 5e. High and consistent damage, and can be combined with other tricks, like Crossbow Master. Not as good in 5.5 because of the nerf to Sharpshooter, but I bet it can still work.

I see the appeal of playing an oddball character, but when everybody is odd, nobody is odd.

"Backgrounds" of the game mechanical kind in 5e are only ever mentioned in the context of creating Player Characters. There is no reason to think that NPCs have them. 0th level characters also aren't a thinkg in 5e. Player characters have levels, NPCs have Challenge Ratings.

If the new game was good I'd probably move. I feel like I've played 5e to death in the last decade, so a brand new D&D would be good.

Sounds like the PDK arrangement is more like dragons with knight pets. Not sure how you'd represent that as a D&D class.

Just remember that you can meta-optimize as much as you like, but the DM will never run out of dragons until he wants to.
