D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

Anyone had something come up at the table yet?

D&D's Forgotten Realms Books Hit With Delays in Europe and Asia

It's crazy how long the Eberron has already been delayed. I am happy I got the new starter set just in time for a local con, but this is bothersome. It does give me more time to think about whether or not I want the FR books with the Alt covers...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your 2026 WotC D&D Wishlist?

Same. The pushback of release dates is getting rediculous in the EU. But at least I am not Asia or Australia based...

D&D General Actual Play: Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set

Alright! I just had two days doing two 2-hr session at the board game con Spellenspektakel here in Utrecht using the new D&D starter set: Heroes of the Borderlands. I had one non-combat encounter where the party could help a wagon teetering off a cliff as the horse in front of it was panicing...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

Just play it like you play your old games. You’ll have fun. I don’t think you will understand until you do. You seem to have some mechanical preferences that might not allow you to enjoy it, which is a shame! It is a popular game and easy to find people to play with.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

Do I really have to get the receipts? You started responding to my posts here, where I had been talking to Horwarth, who had a very bold statement that I tried to give more nuance. Yes, of course a game needs balance, and it is important that people test the game for that, and that those...

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

C'mon man, you started quoting my posts when I was talking about that subject. I am not saying you said that. This is going nowhere.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

I know things could be made simpler, that is not what I am arguing about. Don’t try to make it what we are disagreeing about. I said that ONLY listening to optimizers isn’t how you playtest your game. Balance isn’t #1 of the game design priority in 5e.

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

House rule it yourself if you are the DM. Talk to your DM if you are a player and you want to use the background. Yes, it is not optimal.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

It is way worse for a player to struggle playing their first game, than to discover they picked a spell they don't like after 10 sessions. I don't believe it, I studied it. Apparently game design principles aren't well accepted.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

Sure, that would work if D&D was a competitive video game, but it is not. Usability > Balance/Power when it comes to D&D 5e Not everyone agrees with that, but it is what gets people playing. And once people get playing, they can play the game the way they like and change the numbers if they want.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

The numbers matter, of course, but not that much. Powergamers will only ask for more until they make Pathfinder 2+ Then the game becomes unplayable for people who don't take the game that seriously. Playtests are about usability. Does this work the way we imagined it? Is it understandable?

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

I really wish they will never do that. Why would that be better? Those kinds of players tend to engage more with numbers than with usability or flavor.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

The Travel Terrain table on page 39 of Chapter 2 of the 2024 DMG has a great table that would work for this. It gives you a roll you can make for encounter distance. Reading your post again, that might not be what you meant. I think I have had players spot enemies from a mile a way maybe a...

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

I think the biggest problem with Circle Casting isn't what an adventuring party can do, but what factions with more resources and time should be able to accomplish with it.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

The examples listed here actually don’t worry me. Dragons have Legendary Resistance, great Stealth bonuses and often more than 70 hp. They will be very annoyed, though, and vow to destroy the party. Animal shapes has always been limited to willing creatures. I don’t think this really makes...

D&D General Initial Thoughts on the Two 2025 Forgotten Realms books

Oils require more time, patience and money. They have a physical quality that reminds us of the old masters, that is true. But man, I have seen a TON of awful oil paintings. Turns out back in the day oil paintings were all the rage among rich folk, and it's like an expensive selfie with filter...

D&D General Initial Thoughts on the Two 2025 Forgotten Realms books

Well, a picture says more than 1.000 words. Look, if you don't like the art, fine. It is definitely, 100% created by determined, skilled artists. Calling it AI slop not only makes it sound like you value AI art more, it makes you seem cynical about the skill these artists used.

    D&D 5E (2024) Forgotten Realms subclasses discussion.

Oh it's way better than that. For the entire casting of that moonbeam, whenever an enemy fails the saving throw, you can heal allies. It keeps triggering for the duration of the spell, which can be a lot of healing over a couple turns.

New Unearthed Arcana Brings Back Five Subclasses

Hmmm, I actually think they did it the right way. A defensive fighter subclass with some mounted ribbon features. It's a solid class even without being mounted. An only-mounted subclass would probably be a waste.
