Why Dragonlance's Margaret Weis Left TSR: A Slaying the Dragon Excerpt

Author here! I agree with you 100%. Readers have told me they think I've been fair with Lorriane, so I still hold out home she will agree to an interview. The book is going to be reviewed in the Washington Post, and it will include a regal drawing of her from the book. That might get her...

From Forgotten Realms to Red Steel: Here's That Full D&D Setting Sales Chart

I would add I have zero D&D Known World data, so unless a source sees this and decides to cough up some info, that may be lost to history...

From Forgotten Realms to Red Steel: Here's That Full D&D Setting Sales Chart

Ben Riggs here! These numbers are taken from internal company documents I've been given. As such, they are apparently what the company considered settings. Your points are well taken. But I'm a historian at the mercy of what data has trickled down to us from the past. There's tons of data I...

Slaying the Dragon: The Secret History of Dungeons & Dragons Review

I picked the narrator. I think he's top-notch. I think I tell a story about TSR, so it should be enjoyable in audio format.

Slaying the Dragon: The Secret History of Dungeons & Dragons Review

Have you read Game Wizards? One of the fantastic things for an audience is that Game Wizards focuses on the Gygax era at TSR. Less than a year later, my book's out, and it focuses on the Williams era at TSR. For an audience, it's an amazing coincidence because you get a detailed and complete...

Slaying the Dragon: The Secret History of Dungeons & Dragons Review

Hey all! Ben Riggs, author of Slaying the Dragon here! First off, Bruce Heard is an RPG legend. I'm flattered to even be in dialog with him. Second, yep, my source for those sales numbers is anonymous. Which does bring up a fair question. How do I know those numbers are legit? Well, because I...

D&D General TSR D&D sales numbers compiled by Benjamin Riggs

According to WoTC's marketing survey after purchasing TSR, they found that D&D was something that people still played, but it had ceased to be a business. People didn't see a need to keep buying books, in other words.

I do have Cyclopedia numbers! These are 91-95 Disappointingly low for what may be the single best volume of D&D rules ever released, but one of the themes of TSR in the 90s is the quality of the product often did not result in good sales.

Regrettably, the how I got the numbers story must remain veiled in shadow, as my source wished to remain anonymous, and almost anything I say would allow insiders to begin making deductions about the identity of my source. :(

OP here! Thanks to dajr for reposting from Facebook! FYI I have pretty much all the core books numbers for 1979 through 1999. For settings, I have flagship product numbers, but almost nothing else. I have almost no novel numbers. The great exception to this is Dark Sun. For Dark Sun, I have...

TSR Ed Greenwood Sold The Forgotten Realms For $5,000

This week in Ben Riggs' podcast, he interviews Ed Greenwood, father of the Forgotten Realms, about his 1987 agreement with TSR wherein he sold the rights to the Realms for $5,000. "We also discuss the origin and publication of the Realms, and I am able to tell Ed, officially, how many units his...
