Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die

I can spot a couple of elements in common. :) Good call. I really liked that movie.

The respiratory viruses going around the last couple of months have been brutal. I envy you if your immune system has fought them off this winter up to this point, but still sorry if you've joined the infected crew. 😅

Got in Wednesday night for a relatively short one before D&D. Smith inclined barbell bench 100x14, 100x12, 100x10 +90x4 (up 2 reps, steady set 2, up weight & reps a little on 3 from last workout) Machine biceps curl 50x24, 70x17, 70x16 (up slightly from last time, not close to December, but...

Theoretically. A lot of these players were raised and groomed into this sport from a young age, and centered their whole lives around it. The average NFL career is about six seasons for those who make an opening day roster, right? I want to be wary of hypocrisy and I want to honor and respect...

Yes, it's an excellent ingredient. I grew up using a lot of it as a condiment on steak, but then I grew up and stopped eating my steak overcooked to dryness.

I was sincere. Trying to be clear. I DON'T think you meant it in bad faith, but the peanut gallery seemed to be building to a somewhat discomfiting consensus that felt a bit patronizing. Right. We're not talking about a 23 year old kid whose whole life has been football and is trying to make...

More often than what? I don't mean to imply any bad faith (and I appreciate the acknowledgement of possible cynicism), but it is possible that one of the greatest skiiers in the world is being honest and made a reasonable calculation of risk. Apart from Danny it was beginning to feel a bit like...

Downhill skiing is always going to have these kinds of injuries. From what I saw and heard her knee was stable; it was getting her arm caught in the gate that caused the crash, and the break followed from that.

How do you like your steak?

This, pretty much. Rare or medium rare if I'm out, and depending on the cut. Leaner cuts more rare, fattier ones less so to render the fat better. I don't order a steak anywhere I don't think I can trust the cook to do it right, and at home the same. That's almost exactly how I make a steak...

D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

I understand that everything varied considerably in those days. Though I also remember being struck by an early article on languages and their use on OD&D which I first read in Best of Dragon vol. 1. There were a lot of languages, and if they let you negotiate with monsters you...

Aside from bonus languages? And some folks read the xp bonus rules as meaning that you don't actually swap points to increase your prime requisite (the text seems to indicate that the actual scores don't change, unlike in B/X and BECMI where you literally reduce other scores to increase your...

D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

Nah, it did a pretty darn good job. Every class got a primary role, though you could choose powers and feats to emphasize as secondary. And with the Essentials expansion Fighter got the Slayer class which was Fighter-as-primary-Striker. There were enough customization options to let a player...

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

Sure. I expect because they're easier to relate to, and if they're centered, demihumans can be more easily defined/understood by the ways they contrast with the humans. This is one place I'm sympathetic to Gary's desire to incentivize people to play humans. I just prefer to make them an...

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

TBF when WotC started giving humans actual benefits instead of class-limiting and level-capping everyone else, Humans got a lot more attractive to play, IME. I've played SO MANY MORE humans since picking up 3.0 in 2002 or 2003 than I ever did in the TSR days.

D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

Which is almost ironic because I was thinking of 4E as well while you were talking about wanting to focus on in-encounter priorities, not per-day resources. 4E has primarily At-Wills and Encounter attack powers, so you can just focus on the needs of the current fight, although there are also...

D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

I was toying around with some ideas around this last summer. https://www.enworld.org/threads/toying-with-initiative-phased-and-segments.713755/ More recently I've been using individual initiative in Shadowdark, but I've been representing weapon reach by stealing a simple rule from The...
