Or "Danish, WW2 resistance fighter, portal fantasy'd to fantasy medieval Europe", but that one had a fancy horse (Papillion!) too.

I think it is easy to overstate the inherent "tone" of Shadowdark, from a mechanical perspective. It is one of the easiest games to hack to get whatever tone you want out of it. Many, many people and small companies have already proven that grimdark, mud and blood spelunking is not nearly the only way to play SD.

Absolutely true.

I really want to play Shadowdark in Dolmenwood. If I'm interpreting the setting correctly I think Kelsey's Paladin would be a great thematic fit there.
