Technically, the paladin theme is "French, hangs out with Charlemagne," which is even tougher to get into a Shadowdark campaign.

Or "Danish, WW2 resistance fighter, portal fantasy'd to fantasy medieval Europe", but that one had a fancy horse (Papillion!) too.Technically, the paladin theme is "French, hangs out with Charlemagne," which is even tougher to get into a Shadowdark campaign.
I think it is easy to overstate the inherent "tone" of Shadowdark, from a mechanical perspective. It is one of the easiest games to hack to get whatever tone you want out of it. Many, many people and small companies have already proven that grimdark, mud and blood spelunking is not nearly the only way to play SD.
There's a whole thread on the AC Discord about converting Dolmenwood to SD, so a lot of that work is already done, if not publicly shareable.
This mental loop has saved me so many times. I've also made sure I put all of the RPGs I haven't played yet on a single shelf where I can see them easily.I'm so tempted to buy Dolmenwood, but I think I want it in physical form and it's....gulp...$120 for the three core books.
So then I think that maybe I'll get the PDFs after all, but those sixty bucks. So, for "just" another $60....
And then I think, "I don't even have Western Reaches and Trudvang for Dragonbane yet...save your money."
And a week later the cycle repeats.
