Level Up (A5E) Powerful Attacker Question

The feats from the AG on the tools page are all old versions from a prior pre-publication draft of the AG. The AG has the correct text. I think it’s just an oversight; I can’t imagine that it was intended to allow Cleaving Swing to work with a versatile weapon but not all two-handed weapons.

Level Up (A5E) Are you your own ally for the Help action in combat?

If you could use it to help yourself, it becomes kind of like a jerry-rigged generic “Prepare” action that expires before your next turn, which is kind of cool.

Level Up (A5E) Are you your own ally for the Help action in combat?

I don’t think it’s insane to be able to use the help action to set yourself up for a future benefit. 5e could benefit from more things like that. Anyway I’m stuck in a bygone era—I don’t think you count as your own ally generally in this system.

Level Up (A5E) Are you your own ally for the Help action in combat?

Now for a real rules-lawyerly question for you to pick over: can you help yourself with the help action in combat? Here is the text: RAI, I think you probably cannot help yourself. But note the distinction between “another creature” in the out-of-combat text and, for the in-combat text...

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Pact Weapon + Wand of the Warmage

Yeah, wand of the war mage doesn’t benefit regular pact weapon weapon attacks at all. There’s a lot of stacking like this in A5e. I personally enjoy finding things like this, and IMO it’s not too much because it’s not any different from the archery fighting style, the ranger’s various...

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Pact Weapon + Wand of the Warmage

Nothing in Pact of the Blade says the bonus to eldritch ray or eldritch scythe from a magic weapon requires you to wield your pact weapon. Once you make the magic weapon your pact weapon, you get the bonuses to eldritch ray and eldritch scythe, full stop.

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Pact Weapon + Wand of the Warmage

RAW is stacks. Haven’t seen it in play, but I doubt it’d be a big problem. There are way more ways to increase to-hit in A5e, and I doubt this is out of line with the others.

Gate Pass Gazette Poll Time is Upon Us Again!

More class specific non-spell optional features such as knacks, focus features, furious criticals, invocations, empowered smites, and rogue skills tricks. Also, new maneuvers within existing traditions would be great too. In general, I think A5e could benefit from more choice within existing...

Level Up (A5E) shadow assassin question

How does it work with eldritch disturbance, if at all?

Gate Pass Gazette GPG Issue #23 is ready to roll initiative

Pet archetypes without scaling temp hitpoints makes me sad. :(

Level Up (A5E) Whirlwind and Whirlpool Strike

I think these maneuvers are indeed undertuned. I think allowing one attack on each creature within reach is likely fine. Spreading damage is inherently inefficient. Whirlwind strike is erroneously labeled as a bonus action on the tools site.

Level Up (A5E) Visual Art Speciality and touch spells?

I believe only spells with an area have a “point of origin.”

Level Up (A5E) Quick Question about Lean Into It

I’m frankly puzzled at all the recent confusion. Many maneuvers are obviously written and intended to be the regular attack action with some riders. For balance reasons, others are their own action, without the attack action. It seems straightforward to me.

Level Up (A5E) Do Basic Maneuvers require an attack action or are they a their own action?

Yeah, I’d think that’s right, but by RAW it technically allows goomba stomping to trigger it repeatedly on the same turn. Not that I think many DM should allow that.

Level Up (A5E) Thoughts on A5E classes from your table(s)?

I’m torn on whether berserker is overturned or whether it’s just a martial that’s actually been brought up the level of spellcasters. I also suspect that berserker peaks in relative power at levels 6-8. That’s where we are, and I expect to fall off as we move into the double digits. I’ve...

Level Up (A5E) Is Sun Wukong a valid selection for the spell Polymorph?

Thanks to all who weighed in. Very helpful. A generic “sage monkey” without any equipment makes sense. Of course, that stat block doesn’t actually exist, so it’s probably not RAW (and this is probably an abusive edge case anyway so not RAI). The irony is that even with all that legendary...

Level Up (A5E) Is Sun Wukong a valid selection for the spell Polymorph?

Sun Wukong is a sweet unique NPC in Mythological Figures and Malevolent Monsters. He’s a very cool legendary figure from Chinese mythology. Also, being a monkey, he is classified as a beast. Polymorph provides: “The target’s body is transformed into a beast with a Challenge Rating equal to or...

Level Up (A5E) The Troll Slayers Power level

I think it’s design-wise a great subclass. Pretty balanced with interesting, unique, and flavorful mechanics.

Level Up (A5E) The Troll Slayers Power level

You’re right—the claws should be treated as a ribbon. I’m still inclined to think the half-cover aura of the tempest is better, but you’ve made a good case. Reducing the cost of those 2 and 3 point exertion Tooth and Claw maneuvers is pretty nice.
