D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

yes other species are biologically different from human, a dwarf is far more hardy than a human, can see in the dark, resists poisons and is sensitive to the tremmors in the earth, but a predisposition to quaffing ale, wielding hammers and desiring gold are not biological traits, nor are...

[Old school] I can't deal with inventory

i would say slot based encumbrance systems would typically benefit some sort of basic two-tier system rule between 'big' and 'small' object/slots with the ability to equate a big slot into X worth of small slots.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

because human or dwarf, elf or orc, there's only going to be so much difference between how one kind of species and another lives as a port town or a forest hunter-gatherer village, oh sure, the elf military civilization might favour longbows whereas dwarves hammers and orcs axes, but making a...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

i think you could probably do pretty well in covering the broad strokes of things with a decent group of archtypical culture entries and then make like 2~4 specific species-culture entries for each species that highlight the things unique to them and their ways,

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Uh, didn’t the desire for culture as it’s own category come about because people didn’t like the idea of all members of a species having all their species cultural knowledge seemingly beamed into their head at birth despite potentially growing up never seeing a single other member of their...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Off the top of my head I think id go with something like: Background: 3 skills. Cleric/Druid/Sorcerer/Warlock/Wizard: 2 skills, 1 expertise in a class skill, no reliable talent. Paladin: 4 skills, 1 expertise in a class skill, no reliable talent. Barbarian/Fighter/Monk: 4 skills, 2 expertise in...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

agreed, there should be more skills for martials not less i also think there should be more expertise, jack of all trades and reliable talent handed out to them, i think people are too afraid of letting martials break skill bounded accuracy when like, what's really the worst things they can do...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

my definition doesn't say every member has the same characteristics, although granted i can see how you could twist it into that. my intention was more of a large pool of knowledge/values/traditions that there is significant overlap in, so while they might not find common ground in every part...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

i think if i had to give an off the top of my head definition of what defines a culture it would probably be something like 'A specific collection of shared knowledge, values and traditions unique to a certain group of peoples'

not supporting Yarrel's point, just responding to the question, but even amongst the base PHB backgrounds (14' at any rate) there are a good few backgrounds which do give a free language, some even give multiple. but yeah i would not consider 'a group that shares the same language' to be any...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

i wonder if you could at least get them down to four and that'd still offer a range of targets but better balance on targeting frequency, STR/CON, DEX, and then INT/WIS, CHA or INT, WIS/CHA, i don't know which way of the two would be a better split, but breaking down into rough conceptual...

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

you can have species cultures without the assumption that every elf is born knowing how to wield a longsword and speak elvish, that's the point of it being a culture and not part of their species entry, it's what they teach, learn and value in elf civilizations, and you can even have multiple...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

it seems the part of the thread where we just throw long posts of number and calculations at each other has begun, so that's my cue to check out of the conversation for a while until that blows over.

D&D 5E (2024) Help Me Fill Out a Treasure Hoard

I don’t know about any magic items specifically but would your party value having ownership of a pocket dimension bastion? Just like a pendant that opens a magic door anywhere to it. If you want to make it more on theme maybe all the staff inside are kobolds or something.

no, obviously politicians really need constitution, so that they can endure long meetings in uncomfortable chairs and make their saves VS sleep.

sorry, but i'm failing to connect how that relates to what i said? and when have you ever needed a specific mechanical configuration of your character to claim your half-elf passes as human? uh, can i get a second run by on that sentence please.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

well, i can either play an elf with a background feat or a human with one, but if i want to play a half-elf i have to give up my background feat to BE a half-elf in the first place, one of equivalent power of the elf or human, methinks that certainly falls under the definition of a feat tax.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

my point is unless every species has it's own dedicated species feat slot for that 'something extra' it's going to be competing against the player picking ASI and class feats, it's the same problem feats already have but with another layer of selection to filter them out.

alternatively, they could also just be part of their innate features and locked behind a level threshold rather than the price of a feat, it's not like the 24' designs haven't started dipping their toes in 'at X level your species gains Y', mostly it's just been uses of higher level innate...

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

it is a nice abstract isnt it? :ROFLMAO: though honestly it's really not as complicated as it appears, mostly you're just following the path you're on one node at a time, which primarily are either just minor stat boosts or single abilities, and some of the paths intersect at points.
