Level Up (A5E) Creating Monsters: Two Questions

I recall doing an analysis a while back where, on a CR vs equivalently leveled party basis, the probability to hit a PC was 68% (on average) and the probability for a PC to make a saving throw was roughly the same. Thus, if you have a monster that does d damage per round with standard melee or...

Level Up (A5E) Creating Monsters: Two Questions

Okay. Then perhaps this needs to be added to the errata in the Monstrous Menagerie. As it stands, there is no mention at all about number of targets or dividing damage; however, I have known of the convention for 5e. I just thought that it was odd the monster math in A5E didn't include it and I...

Level Up (A5E) Creating Monsters: Two Questions

I think I see my issue. Everything in the text is about the damage budget - even the DPR. The true damage is different. Your example illustrates this. The budget is 60 DPR. Over a 3 round fight, that's 180 for the damage budget. I spend 90 for the AoE which reduces the budget remaining to 90...

Level Up (A5E) Creating Monsters: Two Questions

For Question #2, I think I figured out the issue. I was reading the Area of Effect text, but after that there is a Limited Use paragraph. Combining these yields the (I think) intended ruling. However, this is still flawed in my opinion. Here is a concrete example: Suppose I am making a CR 11...

Level Up (A5E) Creating Monsters: Two Questions

Question #1: Elite vs Legendary I have always had a hard time understanding the fundamental difference between Legendary and Elite creatures, so I need someone to help me. Legendary creatures, from my understanding, are built to mechanically allow the creature enough actions to compete (action...

D&D (2024) 2025's Ancient Green Dragon Stat Block From The New Monster Manual

Maybe (other than intelligently reducing the number of reaction options) a design like this? It's still a bit cluttered, but I can at least find things faster.

Level Up (A5E) Monster Creation: CR vs Resistances, Immunities, and Legendary Resistances

Well, I ran a session with my modifications (lowering HP based on defensive abilities). Let me say that it was a bit too easy. I will likely go back to the standard method presented in MM from this point forward.

D&D (2024) 2025's Ancient Green Dragon Stat Block From The New Monster Manual

Getting back to the new stat block convo: I have converted a handful of creatures to the new 2024 stat block and ran them today. Here are my thoughts: It will take a bit to get used to the ability score block. Having all the modifiers in a group visually makes it difficult to quickly find the...

Level Up (A5E) Monster Creation: CR vs Resistances, Immunities, and Legendary Resistances

I am considering a hybrid integration with the original 5E monster creation rules. Nothing too fancy, but something with a bit more... guidance in these situations (the campaign I am converting goes to 20th level and there are a LOT of resistances, immunities, and legendary resistances as the...

Level Up (A5E) Monster Creation: CR vs Resistances, Immunities, and Legendary Resistances

Yeah, I thought so as well; however, nowhere in the creature design part of the Monstrous Menagerie do they mention such modifications. Moreover, going through their stat blocks, I don't see such accommodations being given to monsters with considerable amounts of resistances. It's strange.

Level Up (A5E) Monster Creation: CR vs Resistances, Immunities, and Legendary Resistances

The designing monsters section of the Monstrous Menagerie seems to account for offensive abilities, but how does it account for resistances, immunities, and legendary resistances? For example, the following creature seems as though the defensive traits (resistances, immunities, and legendary...

D&D (2024) 2025's Ancient Green Dragon Stat Block From The New Monster Manual

Completely off-topic, so I will ask there, but why doesn't A5E take those into account?

D&D (2024) 2025's Ancient Green Dragon Stat Block From The New Monster Manual

Shoot... I wish I knew that. Where does it reference that? Is it in the DMG? (Sorry, I shouldn't be lazy... I will also try to look for it).
