Yep, a lot of discussion goes on about D&D's wargaming roots but it also has strong pulp fantasy/SF roots. While I still love that stuff, it's good genre fiction moved to go beyond just swords & sorcery and eldritch horrors. I might even get this even though it's worlds away from my usual gaming.

Hard disagree there. Most try to hew close to OD&D. To each their own interpretation though!

I wonder if they're going to also reference Vecna or keep on pretending he's a Forgotten Realms iconic character whose mom was an exiled necromancer. In Greyhawk, he was an Flan emperor that rose up from being an "untouchable" nobody.

I've run Stonehell using Swords & Wizardry Complete. I added on a few classes from original edition days of Strategic Review/Dragon to give modern players more choices and ran it open table on Roll20. I would say it was a success and it only ended because I had something else I wanted to run and...

That's the thing! I grew up and still live in Texas. Plenty of religious people, yes. That doesn't mean they play D&D. Things are definitely different now, though. The concepts and lore have become pervasive throughout culture and, of course, D&D's rise in popularity have helped normalize it.

I've done it for long stretches before while freelancing and do not like it for me, personally. Different reasons, though. I find life becomes monotonous when I don't spend time away from my sanctum. I typically opt to not take advantage of telecommuting at workplaces for these and other reasons.
