D&D 5E You Roll Low, Nothing Happens. Can this/should this be changed?

I don't know about the OP, but for me this is not about winning or losing, is about getting interesting fights. Beating the crap out of your enemy = interesting. Getting your ass handed to you = interesting. Miss - miss - miss - miss - long streak of nothing happening = not interesting...

D&D 5E You Roll Low, Nothing Happens. Can this/should this be changed?

The problem is when your character is supposed to be a competent fighter. When a kobold shoots wide of swings the sword innefectively it's funny, but for Conan or Legolas or Robin Hood? It's anticlimactic and opposed to the fiction. Now, you should, of course, play the game the way you enjoy it...

10 or better to hit period

I appreciate your feedback but, is it that bad? A 4 point difference in AC can already happen in the standard rules (see the pregens in KoS, rogue AC 16, paladin AC 20), does that mean quick and certain death for the squishy? If it is, I can settle for a 3 or even 2 point difference between High...

10 or better to hit period

I've always thought that light armor users havings the same Armor Class than heavy armor users was kind of bland. Rogues and Rangers should, IMO, be more squishy and rely more on their teammates. But yes, this deviates from the standard rules. If you don't like it you can make Low Defenses to...

10 or better to hit period

I recently discussed something similar in rpg.net. I propose having High Defenses (hit on 11+) and Low Defenses (7+), so that attacking a certain defense and not other is still a tactical choice. In this system, wearing heavy armour is required to have a AC as a High Defense. I actually went...

D&D 4E D&D 4E and psychology: Hit chance too low?

Dnd player characters are action heroes. Coward or dim-witted characters could be good PCs as long as these traits don't actually detract from their role as adventurers and main characters. A cowardly inspector cannot fight well should be an NPC, whereas a bouncer should not be necessarily...

Yet another take on hit points

Thank you, Haran.Banjo, that's the kind of feedback I'm looking for. Whenever you spend a healing surge (via second wind, healing word, inspiring word...) the following happens: Dps above zero: a number of dps (as usual) are recovered Dps zero or below: the full dps are renewed So, if the...

D&D 4E D&D 4E and psychology: Hit chance too low?

And what's the point in allowing players to specialize heavily in combat? I mean, it's very reasonable to allow specializing in a combat role, or in a style of fighting, that doesn't create any inbalances in the party because each character shines in his own niche. It's also very reasonable to...

Yet another take on hit points

Here I present my (untested) house rules for hit points and damage: All characters and monsters now have half the stated hit points. They also have half the number of healing surges. As they work differently now, this isn't actually decreasing power. Hit points are relabeled as Defense points...

D&D 4E D&D 4E and psychology: Hit chance too low?

Can you tell me where did I say such a thing? :hmm: I totally support characters with different flavours, what I don't support is characters sacrificing their combat performance because of flavour. You shouldn't need to fight worse because you want to play a smart fighter. In Dungeons and...

D&D 4E D&D 4E and psychology: Hit chance too low?

Do you want Quickdraw or Alertness? That's a choice. Do you want to hit often and do more damage, or do you want to suck? That's not a choice.

D&D 4E D&D 4E and psychology: Hit chance too low?

Yeah, I agree. Just spend 20 minutes rolling up characters and you'll remember how fun it is, and how interesting is to play with an atypical array of ability scores instead of a standard build.

D&D 4E D&D 4E and psychology: Hit chance too low?

I actually discussed ability scores in rpg.net some time ago: [House Rule] Decoupling Ability Scores and Modifiers - RPGnet Forums I would even go further. Why do we need ability bonuses at all? Imagine the wimpy wizard had the same chances to hit than the strong fighter. So what? Classes...
