D&D 5E Variable Short and Long rests

I like an hour rest for a short rest - it forces the players to think about when they're going to rest, because I will roll for the chance of a random encounter if appropriate (and if they're 'in the wild' as it were, it usually is!). A long rest has potentially an even greater chance of an...

D&D 5E What to do with players that always roll well

At the table, all dice rolls should be out in the open. If someone else can't see your rolls, I'm going to assume there's a reason you're hiding them. This is doubly true for stats - including hp. If I didn't see the roll, it didn't happen. You don't get to roll your stats at home and bring...

    D&D 5E Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

I don't allow rolling not observed by myself - we do a group character generation session. I think we mostly stick to the average. In our current group one player has several stats above, one is a tiny bit above, one is on the average, one is slightly below. In the last party, we had one...

    Psionics Coming Soon To D&D?

I'm really hoping it's not just a subclass to sorcerer, or wizard. Psion should be its own class. However, I don't really want several psionic classes - one, really well done with lots of options, would be preferable to me. Also a wild-talent feat would be lovely.

    D&D 5E Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

I'm pretty clear that there is no reroll, you get what you get. However, in game as mechanically constrained as 4e, I'd be more inclined to allow some leway. In 2e, 3e, and 5e I'm less worried about a bad array of stats, though as I said, I've never actually seen an entire set of stats that I'd...

    D&D 5E Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

Honestly, I'm in favour of rolling. I've found playing with low stats can be just as fun for me as high ones. But the real reason I like rolling is because it feels more organic to me, less mechanical. I'm discovering who my character is going to be, not deciding. It represents that element of...

    D&D 5E Odd-numbered ability scores

Sure, he is. But if you were to both make an opposed intelligence check (the games way of 'testing' your intelligence) you'd be on equal footing, despite you being more intelligent. It's not an ideal situation, really. It's also not a massive deal, but if I can find a way to incentivize odd...

    D&D 5E Odd-numbered ability scores

I have to admit, the disparity between odd and even scores has been a bugbear of mine since 3rd ed. I'm tempted to look into my own solution for this. Minigiants 'features' seems like a good idea, even if they're only minor things.

How do you make NPCs out of PC classes?

The rules in the DMG2 are more suited for making PC allies, as opposed to enemies. The NPC rules in DMG1 on p186 are more suitable for your needs. They're expanded somewhere in DMG2 as well to include the PHB2 classes.

    Wizards product page updated 1/25/11

Yeah, I think WotC want to find a way to get players to actually give them money (online CB, DDi sub etc) because traditionally, they don't. This is the case with almost all RPGs and I think they're being a bit foolish trying to change it.

Domination and optional add-on effects -- who decides?

I think you're a looking at it the wrong way. If the character is dominated, that character isn't a puppet acting under the direct control of the monster. It's a suggestion; a brainwash. (in most cases, certainly the case when dealing with illithids) I'd say the character would treat the...
