1/day abilities

I was wondering how people managed 1/day abilities. Currently I've been having the ability reset 24 hours after they used. So one full day. How are others doing it?

My GM sets a specific time of day for each character that the items reset. The time is chosen individually for the character in question, and remains inflexible thereafter.

For example, a follower of the sun goddess might have their 1/day powers reset at dawn.

Once per actual game day, but not twice within 8 hours.

This more closely matches the spell reacquisition rules and is preferable due to consistency with other rules and fewer issues like other systems.

The problem with the "every 24 hours rule" is that you rarely get to actually use it once per day (depending on effect).

The problem with the "every day at dawn rule" is that you get to "abuse it" by casting it 5 minutes before dawn and again at dawn, hence, getting the effect twice within a given day (depending on duration of the effect).

No system is actually perfect, but I like once per game day, no more than twice in 8 hours the best.

Yes 24 hours after the previous use is definitely a little harsh so I wanted to see how others used it. I think I understand how "Once per actual game day, but not twice within 8 hours." works but I want to make sure.

So once between 12am and 11:59pm, but not within 8 hours of another use. So if you used it at 12:01am you wouldn't be able to use it until the next day, but if you used it at 10:00pm you could use it at 6:00am the next day. Correct?

Too much of a bookkeeping pain for me. I just go with 1/game day. Sure, every so often the ability will be used twice in quick succession. But that'll be offset by the times it's saved all day, then isn't used at all. Easier bookkeeping, and I really can't see the abuse in it.

@daoloth: exactly

@Lord Pendragon: There's no bookkeeping involved... any use within the last 8 hours should still be fresh in memory. :) And really, it doesn't need to be "precise on the minute". It's just a rough guideline with a similar restriction spellcasters have with their recent casting limit.
