+1 Level to spellcasting class

I've seen threads talking about things like the orange ioun stone (which gives +1 Caster Level.

But I was wondering if there were any items that gives what the title is listed as?

If not, how much do you think an item like that would cost? Would it be an artifact?

There are spells and Bard songs that can effectively add hit dice. (Inspire Greatness actually adds them as hit dice, complete with BAB increases and all the benefits thereof. )

But, to be honest, what you're asking about doesn't seem like anything I'd ever allow in a game.

You see, for that to mean anything, it would have to be in effect for quite a while. Long enough for spell recovery to happen. Otherwise it's really no different from the Caster level bumps.

Fighter bumps like Inspire Greatness are extremely temporary. Like, a minute or three.

There is that black rock that adds Cleric levels equal to your class levels in any other class. Not sure why any writer thought that was a good idea, even for an artifact.

I don't know any item in D&D ever that granted the equivalent of a class ability level up, without actually leveling up in the class.

Such an item would be so incredibly powerful and able to be so abused that I can't imagine any DM approving of it's use.

about 6 months ago I asked a relevant question and people here almost attacked me through their screens.... and rightfully of course... :) for what you ask can be really powerful/problematic.

Nevertheless, I've come up with a feat that gives what you want and is not game breaking (IMO of course). I currently use it in my games.

It is destined for multi class characters... we all know that multiclass spellcasters deserve something more that "practiced spellcaster"... which is a great feat of course but unfortunately stands on its own.

Voila:

Advanced Spellcaster [GENERAL]

Through difficult training and extensive practice, you have advanced your spellcasting prowess even while pursuing other paths.

Prerequisite: Caster level 9th, Practiced Spellcaster, 5 levels in any class other than the one this feat applies to [This class has to be irrelevant/ineffectual in respect to the spellcasting advancement (Spells per Day) this feat applies to].

Benefit: Your caster level for the chosen spellcasting class increases by 1 (including Spells per Day). Treat your Spells per Day and caster level as if you gained a level in the chosen spellcasting class. This benefit can't increase your caster level to higher than your Hit Dice. However, even if you can't benefit from the full bonus immediately, if you later gain Hit Dice in levels of nonspellcasting classes, you might be able to apply the rest of the bonus.

Special: You may select this feat multiple times. Its effects stack. You cannot take this feat in the same level that you also receive new Spells per Day from a class.

I understand that the HD cap is not really needed... I simply copied the text from practiced spellcaster.
(you never know what a munchkin can come up with... so better be prepared!!!)

Jimlock, does this end up becoming like a mini-gestalt for a multiclass character? Or like what the Natural Bond feat does for Druids by making them sort of 3 levels higher for the Animal Companion, or the Monk's belt granting them 5 more Monk levels for damage?

Hm...

Trying to find it again. I cannot seem to remember which book it was.
Shield of the Sun is a similar such artifact. Grants casting as a level 20 Paladin.

Still trying to find that rock, though.
Paladins aren't the most powerful of spellcasters by any stretch, but this is incredibly awesome, even without the SR and energy resistance. Requirement has built in RP/adventure goodness.

don't think so...

with such requirements, you get this feat when you are allready 5 levels behind any straight spellcaster (at 11th Char. lvl with 5 lvls in something other than the casting class) ... and you can't catch up cause you can't get it while advancing your spellcasting through a class.
I' ve made a few builds to test whether it's broken and it always ended up ok...
those 5 levels really hurt... in a nice munchkin-bane...

It's meant to make for an interesting choice for a multiclassed spellcaster... who has allready fallen behind...
