1 on 1 : How to figure XP

In my current story I plan on the PCs getting seperated and forced to work alone. The characters are 18th level and I was thinking 10th level foes for a level battle for 5400 XP.

I would appreciate any help / advice you can give me.

XP does not change at all in this situation. The tables in the DM Guide show how much XP a character of level 18 should get for defeating a CR 10 challenge, which is 0. The game rules don't consider a creature 8 levels lower than a character to be something challenging enough to learn from. Using the core rules formulas, you would need 10-12 CR 10 opponents to generate an Encounter of EL 17 (Table 3-1).

The real point of your question should be "What EL is too much for a single 18th-level character ?" and "How many opponents (of any CR) is too many against a single character ?". An EL 18 Encounter is designed to be a challenge for 4 characters of 18th level; with numerous lesser opponents, it may prove too much for 1 (as the randomness factor tends to favor upset victories by the weaker side, and the side with the numbers gets more chances for luck to play a hand).

I would suggest that against a single opponent, anything more than 4-5 opponents falls into the category of being too much luck factor. In that case, opponents of CR 13 or 14 are more appropriate.

If you use the book method for XP the XP are figured the same way as usual.

Look up CR, look up party level (that is the individual PC's level in this case), divide XP by number of party members (1 in this case, so you can skip this part).

A 10th level opponent is almost no challenge for an 18th level PC, BTW.

If you want to relate the four-person party EL to a one-person party, you can derive that from the guideline +2 EL for doubling the number of foes.

To have a challenge equivalent to an 18 EL, you would need one CR 14 opponent (equals EL 14 --- four CR 14 opponents would raise the EL to 18 (two doublings in number result in a +4 EL) --- EL 18 is a proper challenge to a four-person party of 18th level, so EL 14 is about the same for a one-person party), or some mix of opponents, that result in an EL of 14.

You can probably go as high as 16 or 17, if you want it more challenging. At EL 18, chances are roughly 50/50 for the PC to survive.

But don't forget, that these are mere guidelines. A single PC might lack the necessary abilities to deal with such an opponent, while another will have it incredibly easy. The CR/EL system also assumes a fair mix of abilities.

Some judgement on your behalf is always necessary.

But be careful. Some melee monsters are absolutely deadly for characters even if their CR is much lower... cause it's assumed to be possible for the PCs to evade it. So if your PCs have to fight e.g. in restrained quarters ... and can't avoid melee...

This is for my Strikeforce: Morituri Storyhour and it will be other NPCs in an arena / dungeon setting. This was why I was hestitate with higher CRs. It looks like I will need to playtest a bit.
