After hearing stories of people surviving gunshots to the head, falls from 30,000 feet without a chute, people cutting their own limbs off to survive, etc. I fully believe this statement.

That actually came up in my game... against a displacer beast, the 4th-level paladin with a greatsword warned it to "surrender or die!" and then rolled a crit threat.

Followed by a natural 20.

Followed by another natural 20.

Dead displacer beasts. The other two players made notes to always surrender to the paladin, if it comes up....

This story proves that reality is complex. So, I would argue that those who argue over how "realistic" any rules set must at least admit that rules can only approximate the complexity of our world. (Of course, gaming rules have a fair share of weirdness as well. Thus, the flumph.)
