10th Level Hunter of the Dead, Enervation & Energy Drain

IIRC, Monte Cook designed the class* -- perhaps someone should ask him (on his boards, probably) how he intended the ability to work.

*Or at least the version that appeared as a "Class Act" article in Dragon; I don't recall whether the two versions are identical or not, though. That Dragon article might be another source to check; maybe the wording is different there.

"as do other level- or experience draining penalties"

Whaaaa? "As do" what? That makes absolutely no grammatical sense at all. It seems to imply that the HotD is affected by the penalties associated with energy draining effects.....but if you read it word for word, it doesn't really say that. That phrase actually refers to "death" rather than "energy draining effects".

In other words, "death results in other level- or experience- draining penalties." Which, of course, is not at all true, nor could they have possibly meant to imply that.

Where's an English major when you need one?

It's simply clarifying that the HotD still loses levels if he/she casts spells with an XP cost, or other similar situations.

I'd hate to see a HotD going around throwing Wishes everywhere, thinking he's immune to the level loss of the spell. (Nothing in the rules say you die if you drop to 0 experience).

You can't spend enough XP when casting spells or creating magic items to lower your level. If you don't have enough XP, the effect simply fails.
