1980s cartoon, What was its name?

Okay, I was trying to recall an old cartoon from the 1980s that I remember watching on Cable, maybe it was Nickelodeon maybe it was on PBS, I'm not sure. What I remember most was that it followed some children during the Spanish Conquistador era in South America/Central America. The search for El Dorado was prominant in the storyline. I recall a large golden bird that I seem to remember being used as a mount or something...

There's not much more I remember.

Anyone help me remember the name of this show?

I wish they would release this on DVD. I know a number of people who would purchase it, so why doesnt it come out!!
