1d20... for all rolls.

Raving Raven

That's right; I plan on altering the way in which the current game functions in order to make it plausible to use only one die. It also helps that I want a deadlier game then the original D&D.

Most of what will need to be changed will be combat oriented; all the other aspects of the game rarely use a die other then the d20. I have a few ideas, but I wanted to pick the brains of you good folk. Things I've already thought of: "Soak" in addition to Dodge, Armor having both a Absorbsion and an Evasion rating, re-balancing the classes, re-working spells, Wound Ratings...

Can you add to the list of ideas I already have?

The obvious/simple way to do that (but probably not what you're looking for) is...

a table converting d20 rolls to results with other dice:

20 12 10 08 06 04

01 01 01 01 01 01
02 01 01 01 01 01
03 02 02 02 01 01
04 03 02 02 02 01
05 03 03 02 02 01
06 04 03 03 02 02
07 04 04 03 02 02
08 05 04 04 03 02
09 06 05 04 03 02
10 06 05 04 03 02
11 07 06 05 04 03
12 07 06 05 04 03
13 08 07 05 04 03
14 09 07 06 05 03
15 09 08 06 05 03
16 10 08 07 05 04
17 10 09 07 05 04
18 11 09 07 06 04
19 12 10 08 06 04
20 12 10 08 06 04

I would make up a table for the math impared but I'd use modulo arithmetic

d4 = d20%4
d8 = d20%8

There's problems though.

8 is not a factor of 20 so you'll weight the die towards 1-4 Here's the odds
1-4 = 15%
4-8 = 10%

d12 weights the die towards 1-8, here's the odds
1-8 = 10%
9-12 = 5%

Also 6 would be weighted towards 1-2, here's the odds
1-2 = 20%
3-6 = 15%

I do not think this is a viable option, besides I like damage dice varying, making it all 1d20 significantly changes the flavor of the game, make sure you're PCs are up for that flavor change.

I actually use a d20 as poer the system and a d6 for everything else (d4 = d6- 2 (min 0), d8 = d6+2, d10=d6+4 etc)

That doesn't really work, it screws up the averages. It would be, d4=d6-1, d8=d6+1, d10=d6+2, d12=d6+3.

I don't want to use the d20 as a substitute for other dice; I want it as the only die roll in the game.

But, that's okay... I think I have enough ideas as it is. :)

Re: Just one question...

One quick question, which someone was bound to ask, guess it'll be me... Why?

1) It simplifies things for new players.
2) To see if it can be done.
3) To create a more realistic combat/damage system (which can be done with differing dice, although I think it would be easier to do using one die type throughout.)
