1st Level bonus feat question

Do you have the bonus feat for 1st level apply to only the first character level, or to each class level? I go with the first choice (once only, period) but have heard of others that acutaly think it's the other way around. I'd like other opinions, and why you think that way.

I'd thought about doing this as a poll, but donut know how to, and there are way too many polls already ;)

It is Character level. Not class level, if you are refering to the bonus feat for 1st lvl characters. Once you have more than one class you are no longer first level even if you take 1 lv in every class in the book.

However, if you take a CLASS that gives a free feat at first CLASS level, then you would get that free feat. Like say with fighters, if you were mage or rogue for a few levels and then took a level of fighter, you would get a free feat at your first fighter level and again at your second fighter level as described in the class progression in the PHB.

Reference pg 22, Table 3-2. That chart applies to all your levels combined. So, if you are fighter level 3 and rogue level 4, you consult level 7 (3+4) on the chart.

In the same way, you only multiply skill points by 4 once, no matter how time you multi-class.

It's why people say if you're a multi-class fighter/rogue, go rogue first - a Ftr1/Rog1 has 16 skill points, a Rog1/Ftr1 has 34...

Thanks All

That's how I'd interpreted the rules, yet there are those in the group I play with (I believe this includes the DM) that insist that you get that "Bonus feat for 1st level" every time you take a new class, because you're 'starting at first level for that class'.

I thought it worked that way for a short while when first reading the PHB, but apparently I'm an anti-munchkin becuase I couldn't believe they'd let something that cheezy stand.

Now to get the DM to read the threads and see things the right way, thankfully his 'puter is back up and on the net again.

So a human with 20 classes should have 29 feats? As well as attendant bonus virtual feats? They need their head examined.
