1st-level spells that are worthless to a 1st-level caster?

What first-level spells are pretty much worthless for a first-level caster?

I've been amazed at seeing some 1st-level wizards using magic missle. I mean, 1d4+1 has a 50% chance of not killing even an orc.

Does anyone use summon monster/ally at first level?

What else?

Magic missile is worthless because it's not a guaranteed one-shot kill? Hardly. It's way better than shocking grasp which has the same average damage but requires the wizard to make a touch attack.

Our druid used summon nature's ally at first level. It provided distraction and flanking, briefly, when he didn't want to step into melee himself. Not a great spell like it is at higher levels, but it did get cast sometimes so I guess it's not completely worthless.

A lot of spells are "useless" to a lvl 1 caster, but M.M. is certainly not among them! It's guaranteed* to hit the target (from a safe distance!) and guaranteed* to deal damage; what other form of attack available to any lvl 1 character can boast that?!?

That said, the best spells for a lvl 1 wizard are probably Mage Armor and Shield; the spells that helps you survive long enough to reach lvl 2... ;)

*: Well, almost... ;)

I'd like to meet the DM that throws creatures with DR/5 at level 1 players...

...in a dark alley.

DR dosn't help against M.M:, but the Shield spell does...

NPCs with Potions of Invisibility and ethereal creatures are also a possibility...

I don't mean to hijack (honest!) but I was under the impression that the new 3.5 DR worked so that if you, say, summoned a Lemure with DR 5/good or silver, that DR applied to all damage other than good or silver, regardless of whether it was magical or not. Am I wrong?

I'm afraid you are incorrect. DR does not apply to spells, energy damage, or touch attacks.

From the SRD:

DAMAGE REDUCTION

[/font]
Some magic creatures have the supernatural ability to instantly heal damage from weapons or to ignore blows altogether as though they were invulnerable.

The numerical part of a creature’s damage reduction is the amount of hit points the creature ignores from normal attacks. Usually, a certain type of weapon can overcome this reduction. This information is separated from the damage reduction number by a slash. Damage reduction may be overcome by special materials, by magic weapons (any weapon with a +1 or higher enhancement bonus, not counting the enhancement from masterwork quality), certain types of weapons (such as slashing or bludgeoning), and weapons imbued with an alignment. If a dash follows the slash then the damage reduction is effective against any attack that does not ignore damage reduction.

Ammunition fired from a projectile weapon with an enhancement bonus of +1 or higher is treated as a magic weapon for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. Similarly, ammunition fired from a projectile weapon with an alignment gains the alignment of that projectile weapon (in addition to any alignment it may already have).

Whenever damage reduction completely negates the damage from an attack, it also negates most special effects that accompany the attack, such as injury type poison, a monk’s stunning, and injury type disease.

Damage reduction does not negate touch attacks, energy damage dealt along with an attack, or energy drains.

Nor does it affect poisons or diseases delivered by inhalation, ingestion, or contact.

Attacks that deal no damage because of the target’s damage reduction do not disrupt spells.

Spells, spell-like abilities, and energy attacks (even nonmagical fire) ignore damage reduction.

Sometimes damage reduction is instant healing. Sometimes damage reduction represents the creature’s tough hide or body,. In either case, characters can see that conventional attacks don’t work.

If a creature has damage reduction from more than one source, the two forms of damage reduction do not stack. Instead, the creature gets the benefit of the best damage reduction in a given situation.
