1st trip to GenCon-Looking for tips

The event book is your friend, they will be all over the place but look at the map also if you get there on Wednesday, get a lay of the land, to know where things are.

I also disagree on the "not buying the first day" advice. If it's something you really want, chances are others might also really want it. There is horror story after horror story (well, maybe an exaggeration) about people who didn't get what they wanted because the company sold out of whatever it was. So, if you want it, buy it!

Always depends on the item. Some items are hot, and move fast. Others don't move quite as fast. I've gotten some good deals waiting till saturday or sunday on some things. But yes, I have missed out on things too.

My suggestion, bring a small cooler or stick a few cans/bottles in your pack. Much cheeper than buying drinks at the con.

There are several good restraunts and fast food joints within a 10 minute walk of the con. Might not be a bad idea to scount the area a bit the day before though.

Have fun. Generic tickets are nice for getting into odd games you might have missed in the book, but schedule a few as well. If you plan on going to cons again, the Living games can be a fun way to have a convention campaign character (or several) you can look forward to playing, and get a chance to game with players other than your normal group.

In addition to just plain remembering to eat, make sure the food includes adequate nutrition. Being undernourished *and* light on sleep can just wreck you. Especially with people from all over the country trading colds...

Drink plenty of water. By plenty I mean an equal volume of water to the total of (caffienated beverages + alcoholic beverages). At least.

Go to the costume contest.

Bring a camera.

Try to sign up for the huge game of Nuclear War for your first event. :)

Sign up for one or two events outside your normal experience. The first time I went to GenCon my friend and I signed up for a Star Wars larp since neither of us had larp'd before. We were happy to find this larp had a special guest. Anthony Daniels as C3-P0. :D

That HAS to be one of the coolest things I've ever heard of. Was he in costume?

Advice: Play the D&D Nascrag tournament. Most fun to be had at GenCon.

www.nascrag.com

listed as NASCRAG in the event spreadsheets from the GenCon website.

I loved NASCRAG last year!

Last year was my first GenCon. I'm unable to attend this year..dammit...but my friends and I decided that for future GenCons, generic tickets are the way to go. My group advanced in NASCRAG to round 2, but felt obligated to attend an event we'd bought tickets for. I've regretted that ever since.

For the love of all that's holy, please shower daily. I was in a game with some folks who I'm pretty sure had only heard rumors of soap...ever.

Leave time to hit the dealer room on the last day. Some of those folks will take any offer you make on merchandise just so they don't have to cart it all back.

Take a camera.

Keep a pen and notebook handy for email addresses of folks you meet, as well as autographs of gaming luminaries you run into.

And if you see the girl dressed in a vinyl nun's habit, please tell her I said "Hello". sigh.....
