2 man gestalt team - problems.

A Planar Ally / Planar Binding creature can be a guard. If you're ethically flexible, some skeletons or zombies can make good guards--they don't need to sleep at all, and have darkvision.

Well, an untrained hireling costs 1 sp a day. A trained one (who might have ranks in listen and spot) costs 3. So, for less than 1 gold piece a week, you can get someone who should at least be able to scream when the ambushing orcs rip him open. For two gold pieces a week, you might even get a guy who could throw a rock and then go hide.

If you're morally flexible, you could always just rent a few kids from a farmer for a couple gold pieces (he doesn't have to feed them *and* he's getting paid? Score!), but that'd probably be an alignment violation for a paladin.

Both PCs should have excellent Charisma scores. You may eventually opt to each spend a feat on Leadership. With good charisma scores and a bit of time, you can build a small army of followers (not to mention some useful cohorts), which should take care of watches at night. It might cost you a feat each, but in gestalt, this can be solved by just taking a level of fighter at some point or another - even a sorcerer/warmage is going to have a few feats he wants from the Fighter list.

At level 1 the alarm spell lasts 1 hour. Not very useful when you need to sleep 8 hours. The hireling idea isnt bad......im still not sure what the game is going to be like(not much info so far), but if theres a chance i will bring one along.

The DM emphasized no sleeping in armor unless you have endurance feat. That makes me think he wants to pull night time ambushes.

Have the arcane caster pick up sudden extend and rope trick. If you can make it to level 4, you'll probably never see a night time ambush again.

Edit: ...or save the feat and get a lesser metamagic rod of extend.

I was in a campain and we did the rope trick thing for camping all the time, it was the best we got so used to it that never needed watch or anything and got lazy. The fun came in the middle of the night after a pretty rough day of dungeon delving when a roving beholder came along with his central eye opened. It was a surpirse for all of us including the beholder when the 5 of us fell out of nowhere. Nobody died but it was not a fun wake up call. Sorry to derail post but don't get to tell that story often.
