2 PC campaign, Which Class?

Def Druid.

See if the DM will allow weapon groups from Unearthed Arcana( I think?).
Then have the Monk take a pole arm weapon group, give him a long spear or bardich (I think). This will allow him to use the polearm at 10', and he can use his monk unarmed combat at 5'.
Also, look for magic-items that allow the Monk to enlarge for even more fun with reach (potions of enlarge aren't that expensive).

IMO Monk is a great character for a 1st time player. Lots of options without the complexity of spells plus good survivability. Plus 1st time players tend to think outside the box more when it comes to combat and Monks can often do the outside the box easier than other character classes.

I'd go with Beguiler, max out Use Magic Device and you can heal.
May out Search and Disable Devise and you can handle traps.

With your Spellcasting (mostly illusion and entchantment) you can get around fights pretty good.
If you have to fight you have some good buff spells for the monk and some good spell to flee with him when he turns out to be to weak ;)

Play what you want to play. :)

With just 2 PCs the 'party' will be lacking, anyways, so don't worry about that. Either the DM will take that into consideration, or the game will not work either way.

I would agree with that sentiment. With just two PCs, you're going to be lacking somewhere no matter what, unless the DM creates a couple of NPCs to be voices in the party and/or to round things out.

If your playing a higher-level campaign, multi-class as a cleric and wizard/sorcerer. Shoot for the mystic thurge prestige class a.s.a.p.. That way, you've got blasting spells () and healing spells ().

Once you've done that, secretly higher a group of thugs to take out your clearly insane DM. Who runs a campaign with 2 players. I always shoot for 5: healer, blaster, tank, striker, and buffer or a repeat of one of the above rolls (for extra power!)

We would like to have more players, but two is what we have. We are going to be starting out fairly low level. I'm hoping to convince him to let me use the dark creature template on either a changeling or a whisper gnome and going with the beguiler. If I go with a beguiler he will keep things more towards the sneaky end of the spectrum, although he is hoping to use undead as well.

That's one of the best things which can happen to you. Undead tend to be mindless, so silent image should puzzel them a while.

See if the DM will let you use gestalt rules to compensate a bit for the party size. :)

Really, I think a stealthy character (rogue, factotem, beguiler) could work well if you really don't want to do healing or general arcanist spell casting. And there's always Use Magic Device later on. The DM would have to make the campagin fit with the party's make-up, but if he's willing to play to what you guys do well, such a party really could function well, sneaking around, possibly using social skills or enchantments to avoid direct conflict. And in an encounter, fighting like cowardly guerillas with hit and run tactics.

I have to go and not reccommend Bard, though. Doesn't do much one of the other 3 social/skill classes listed can handle and is typically strong in proportion to party size (more people to buff). They also tend to make a lot of noise.

First off, Welcome to ENWorld.

Now, on to your question.

Rogue or Beguiler could be quite potent in this combo. You could both evade encounters with stealth, Tumble around enemies to flanking spots in combat and have several other abilities to assist you in other areas. The Rogue and Beguiler both also have Use Magic Device, allowing you to make use of many handy items (especially for just-in-case circumstances).

But I'm going to head to another couple of classes here... Obviously, what is of use depends on what you have access to...

Dragon Shaman (PH2) could be useful. Your auras would affect both of you, and Vigor aura is a life-saver at low-levels, especially when there's no Cleric around. And with the right Totem Dragon, you have some stealth skills (Black, Green, and White give Hide and Move Silently, Blue and Copper each have Hide) coupled with other handy powers. You could pick up the Entangling Exhalation feat (Races of the Dragon) and stop enemies from chasing you and your Monk buddy with a stylish blast of your breath weapon.

Binder (Tome of Magic) could also be quite handy. You can change your focus on a daily basis, and always have some fun stuff with which to work. Depending on your bind, you can support the Monk with ranged attacks, split enemies up, sneak around, use potent magics, or fight like the Monk does... Take your pick. :)

Concerning the noise factor... Perform (mime)? ;)
