2 questions RE: 3rd level spells

1) Do magic missles suffer the 50 % miss chance granted by a Displacement spell ? If all you need to target your missles for an automatic hit is to SEE any part of the target does it matter that the target is actually 2 feet away from where he appears to be ?

2) When Dispel Magic is cast as an Area of Effect does it affect friendly buffs and spells in the area as well ?

Thanks.

1) no.

2) area dispel attempts to dispel on each target, starting at the highest level spell and moving downward from there. IMO friendly buffs and spells are potential candidates for being dispelled under the normal dispel rules.

Cheers

To be a bit more clear, it is the spell with the highest Caster Level, not spell level, so it is possible to boost your CL somehow and give yourself a couple low spell level buffs to provide some kind of armor.

I'd never noticed that before - and it seems pretty silly too, since it doesn't give you any help in choosing the order in which spells should be checked in most cases!

Out of interest, if someone has say 6 spells working on him, all of which he cast himself at his caster level, what order would you use to check results of an area dispel?

Cheers

I'd also assumed until recently that it was in order of spell level. For multiple spells at the same caster level, I'd work down from highest spell level to lowest.

Remember when you cast spells, you can voluntarily cast them at a lower caster level .. (ie 10th level caster, casts Mage Armor as a 5th level caster ...)

no feats required, nothing special ... just declare it ... viola ... now Mage Armor becomes the "first one" ..

If they are tied, I believe the rules indicate "roll randomly", however, we play "If caster level is tied, then go to spell level" ... if that also ties, then we roll randomly .. ;)

As long as you meet the minimum caster level required to cast teh spell in the first place.

As an example - a sorcerer can not cast a less than 6d6 fireball.

1d6/level but it requires a 6th level sorcerer to cast a 3rd level spell.

And rangers and paladins never have a CL of 1.
