2 simple questions

I like starting off at first level also. The players care for there characters more.

As for hitpoints, I let them re-roll once then it costs 100exp for each additional re-roll. My monster usually have close to max or Max hitpoints.

Hope that helps

We start a campaign at 1st most of the time, occasionally 2nd.

Starting at 2nd is nice for multiclassed characters; a rog/sor who can't cast spells or can't open locks isn't a rog/sor, but more of a rog/sor wannabe.

(Yes, I'm aware of the 0/0 alternate rule but it's not as clean, imo.)

I normaly start at second level... but it's to allow people who want to play a +1 ECL race the option to do so without having to roll up a new character in a session or two.

1st or 2nd. Depends upon the interest in a ECL+1 race, as well as multilclassing, as well as the module I'm willing to run.

I have a system for rolling dice: You get a certain result depending on what you rolled:

d4: as is
d6: 1s are counted as twos
d8: 1&2 is counted as 3
d10: 1,2&3 are counted as 4
d12 1,2,3&4 are counted as 5

for a d10, the average only increases by half a point (from 5.5 to 6 per HD) but players and montsers don't get shafted as much when they roll crappy.

Please don't take offense, but your gaming group sounds like a bunch of whiny, powergaming, min/maxing muchkins.

Don't let them push you around. It doesn't matter a darn what most other D&D players do. It is your game and you make the rules. You shouldn't change your game around just because a bunch of other guys play the game a certain way.

Now if you want to start the game off at higher levels fine, if you think it would be fun to have the PC's always get full hit dice everytime they level up that's fine too (although in my opinion, it is pretty munchkiny, and I would never do it), as long as it is a game that both you and your players can have fun playing.

In any case I would take a firm stand with them, if you have already decided that your are starting at level 1 or that they have to take their bad dice rolls then stick with your decision. Don't back down, or they will start second guessig all your rulings. As the DM you need to have authority and command respect. The worst thing that you can do is be wishy washy.

Whatever you do let your players make you their bitch.

If you care to know, I start players of at level 1 for a campaign unless there was a special reason not too, I would more likely start them off at higher levels for a 1-shot adventure if we were currently playing a low-level game or at low levels if we were in a high level campaign, just for a change of pace. And I would not mess with the die rolls.

But please, pay no attention to how I play the game.

Starting levels are usually 1st - 3rd.

HP... Ok. Here's an example. In theory you could end up with a 5th level fighter with 14 hp even if he has max hp at level 1. I don't like that idea since his fighter would be worth crap in combat compared to his friend who's 5th level fighter have 47 hp. No. If a person wants to make a fighter I will assume that's because he want's to fight. Therefore I will give him a chance to have fun with that for more than 1 to 2 combats :). So unless somebody want's it different for his character I rule: 1st gives max and max/2+1 for the remaining levels.

This is really hard to say.

I am very campaign oriented, so I don't start new games often. But of the games I have run:

  • A 2e game started at first level, and converted to 3e at second level. There has been a total player turnover since it started, and new players have come in at one level below the party average.
  • A fresh game started at first level
  • An "off night" game started at 9th level
  • An "off night" game started at 4th level to allow for ECLs

I suspect games started at 1st level are the plurality, but not the majority.

I like the disclaimer you have added to your sig.

Hopefully it will cut down on the undeserved heat that you taken far too many times on these boards.

Ditto to what was said above, start at 1st level for campaign, occasionally higher if it's a one-off. And hits are take a die average or take whatever the roll comes up, chosen before rolling. Those are the only ways I've ever played or DM'd. Nice to have a steady group that thinks a lot like you do. :)
