2002 Oscar Contest (Players' Picks Guide inclosed)

It's standard procedure for the studios to withhold their oscar candidates until the very end of the year, when those films are given a limited release in major cities before Jan 1st in order to qualify for the awards.

hmm. I did not know that. It seems silly to me, but I am not in the entertainment business.

Since many of these movies will be out of the theaters by the time the Oscars come out- what does it get them? More sales when it comes out on tape/dvd? Is that the theory?

Most of the films nominated for the major awards are in theaters right now, actually - all except Road to Perdition perhaps which I imagine is available for rental. So they all could certainly benefit from any buzz generated by the nominations.

Just have to ask why? Edited posts have the time and date automatically added to the end of the post, so if it's done in time why does it matter?

Because when we get down to the end I'd rather not have to worry that someone might try to pull a fast one. Easier for everyone involved if there is a simple, easy to follow, policy in place that is fair to everyone across the board.

I'm a pretty generous guy who really is only doing this for the fun of it. Chances are unless someone is acting like a yutz, everyone will get a little "sumpin sumpin" just for participating. Heck, I hope that everyone who knows me (even a little by now), knows I'm a fair guy who always tries to help people out (as much as time permits) and will always give people the benefit of the doubt if they're playing it straight with me.

Wowser! There's some things in the guesses that make sense to me, if taken as part of the guess selections as a whole, and then when I compare one set of guesses against another I'm surprised by the diversity.

Does anyone feel like posting an extra post to suggest their own reasoning behind their combination of choices? If not, please post that you'd rather keep your reasoning private.

I think it might be more fun to close down the guessing period a week prior to the awards and discuss our individual reasoning for them a week before the awards than to rationalize them afterwards. Any thoughts on that plan?
