2005 New Year's (Gaming) Resolutions

exile

First Post
I just finished reading through the very good thread about gaming regrets from 2004, and a thread about gaming resolutions for teh new year seemed an appropriate next step. I apologize if such a thread already exists and I missed it.

To start, here are my own resolutions for the coming year- at least those that pertain to gaming.

1.) I will run the second and, if all goes well, the third and fourth arcs in my present Forgotten Realms game. The second arc will feature less combat and more role-playing and problem solving than did the first arc.

2.) I will run a Star Wars game based on the A1-4 Slavers modules from TSR/ADD1E.

1. I will run at least one session of Terra Primate

2. I will run a campaign (10 or more sessions) of either Deadlands or Fading Suns

3. I will go to either Gencon or Gencon SoCal

4. I will continue to update my story hour with something approaching regularity :)

I will find someway to both get married and go on a fabulous honeymoon without missing Gen Con Indy (or completely alienating my non-gaming bride to be).

In 2005, I'd like to:

1. Play games more regularly, not just d20, but also other systems. I really can't wait to try out The Shadow of Yesterday (Anvilwerks) in actual play. I love the artwork and concept! I also want to get a copy of the Monster Burner for Burning Wheel (Luke Crane) and see what that's all about. I also want to start running more adventures, even if they're just for one or two sessions. Though d20 is easier since I know the system better, it would be fun to try new systems, too.

2. Use more great books like Torn Asunder: Critical Hits (Bastion Press) and Poisoncraft: The Dark Art (Blue Devil Games) in my d20 game. They both have a lot of great new rules and additions to improve a game. I especially like the poisonous monsters and spells in the latter and I'm not surprised at all it was nominated for TWO ENnies this year. If you haven't picked it up already, please do. You won't regret it! There's a reason why we've decided to carry it at Indie Press Revolution and that's because it is SO DAMN GOOD.

3. Try out Castles & Crusades (Troll Lord Games). I've only heard good things about this game and it looks like just the kind of play I'm interested in. I also want to get a complete collection of the Gygaxian Fantasy World series at some point.

4. Get together more regularly to play card and board games and build my collection. I really want to play more Illuminati Deluxe now that I have the Y2K expansion pack. I'm also getting an order of "War! Age of Imperialism" and "Kingdoms" soon. So excited!

5. Buy some more smaller RPG books like Kobolds Ate My Baby (9th Level Games) and My Life with Master (Half Meme Press).

6. Pick up Grim Tales (Bad Axe Games). Lots of people have been saying a lot of good things about this book. I've got to check it out.

I can probably think of a lot more I should do, but this is plenty enough for me.

1) Increase the fun of gaming, both for me and my players.

2) Cater to my players preferences more strongly, by listening to their comments about the games and asking for them to help fill in week points in my style.

3) Publish more stuff for gaming than I did this year (which shouldn't actually be hard...)

Ed Cha,
Excellent post in that you opened my eyes to some gaming stuff that I wasn't aware of. I'm going to have to look more closely at Shadows of Yesterday and Burning Wheel.

Both of these, plus run at least one session of Feng Shui!

Cheers

I will:

1) Complete the Abyssal Campaign (both in writing and playing).

2) If I manage to complete my Warcraft campaign, I'll give Exalted a try.
