2005 New Year's (Gaming) Resolutions

1) Finish a campaign that doesn't involve me getting bored and throwing too much at the party, causing a TPK.

2) If playing & not running, to help promote teamwork and intelligent thought into the other players in my group. (While DM'ing, I just throw stuff at them and watch what happens...hmmm...kind of like atom smashing if ya think about it. Take 2 atoms and throw them at each other, then watch what falls out of each of them.)

3) To spend more at my local FLGS. (I'm kind of cheap, and WoTC hasn't been giving me much reason to spend my $$.)

4) To cut down on picking on Dale. He's a nice guy, but he makes it soooo easy! ...Yeah, I'm going to hell.

Use at least one item from every D20 book I own (god, it's something like 60-70 hardcovers alone) before buying any new books.

Unless I really want the new book. No, seriously. Really want it. You know, like The Black Company.

Or Slavelords.

Or . . .

Uh oh. I think I need a support group.

My next campaign will:

1. have slower progression;
2. more RP and character (not character sheet) development;
3. explore moral and ethical themes; and
4. be set in Midnight.

I really, really, really want to run a Midnight campaign so I suppose a formal resolution is a good way to focus on this goal....

Figure out a way to quickly make NPCs that don't break the rules because I'm time pressed.

Decide on a campaign setting and stick with it. My history is littered with about three campaigns where characters didn't die, we just stopped playing when something else came up.

Play more boardgames with people I like, but can't roleplay with. For me, being an adult is busy work and the only time I get to see some of my friend is when I roleplay, which just isn't right.

I'm sure there's other stuff I'm missing. (Oh yeah, finish some more reviews...)

Simply to encourage my group to stay together and play as much as possible by being agressive about scheduling everyone's time (even then we can generally only meet once every two to three weeks). Pick up the DMing reins if necessary.

My resolutions:

  1. Play more, and yet somehow DM more, too.
  2. Introduce my players to the world beyond d20.
  3. Crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentations of their women.

Ed Cha,
Excellent post in that you opened my eyes to some gaming stuff that I wasn't aware of. I'm going to have to look more closely at Shadows of Yesterday and Burning Wheel.
Chad

Thank you! I always try to spread the word about great games and I hope that Indie Press Revolution will be one way of doing this by carrying only high-quality stuff and talking about them.

If you like The Shadow of Yesterday, you should also consider Conspiracies of Shadows which is written and illustrated by Keith Senkowski who also did the artwork for The Shadow of Yesterday and its upcoming supplement due in a few months. Most of our orders on Indie Press Revolution (about 80%) for The Shadow of Yesterday have been accompanied by an order of Conspiracies of Shadows. Together, they've been selling like HOT CAKES!!! And we've gotten a lot of thank you e-mail from people saying how much they liked them (and getting the FREE Priority Mail shipping, of course.)

Have you picked up Poisoncraft: The Dark Art? I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is really useful and a must-have for anyone playing d20. I've always thought the core books were a bit weak on poisons.

Conan, welcome back. It is nice to hear from you. How have you been? I have been thinking that we have been missing your bulkish presence here lately. I guess taking care of California has been pretty rough lately, with all the crazy stuff going on in Hollywood. Tell Charlton "NRA Moses" Heston I said hi. Glad to have you back.

Sincerely,
Mako

Gosh, I probably should have responded, too, eh?

Okay, I will feign to do the following next year:

Force my players to actually come to the game
Kill all of them with a demi-lich
Resurect them
Kill them all again with a red dragon the likes of which no one has ever seen!

On a more serious note, my main plan is to try to get the rest of my campaign story fleshed out with more detail. I have most of my main, central concepts completed, but I need to finish out the details. Like the stats on the VAmpire Lord and things like that.
