Wow, I remember all the PHB2 hate earlier in the series. How did this happen? Not that it's a bad thing.

What you forget is there is a lot of PHB2 love. It's just the hate is loud and vocal (especially in Survivor threads, that focus on which one you like least). Even the hate is often focused on sections of the book.

Based on the various threads about the book I've seen (and various "which book should I buy" threads) the PHB2 has a very, very strong reputation. I happen to agree with it.

As for changing the voting, it's traditional with Survivor and the earliest Survivor threads here all did it. I think you give scant credit to the awareness of the users here. \

I use a *lot* of D&D books in my campaigns. PHB2 has had the most effect of any book on my campaigns. It is really the best book of the year.

Cheers!

I love both of the Fiendish Codices, I really do. I enjoyed reading them more than I enjoyed reading the Players Handbook II. But I still voted for the PH2 as a better candidate for product of the year for 2006. Why? It has a much wider appeal; about half my players bought copies. It gets used at every single game session. I think more people will find something in there that they will use in their games. And those are important considerations for a best product of the year.

I'll note that main vocal opponent of the book (at least in these threads) was Psion. Part of his complaint is that he doesn't like new classes and/or those classes, yet his players want to use them. Sounds like one vote against to several votes for the book to me.

It gets used at every single game session.

Of anything you can say about a gaming supplement, this is, for me, the highest praise a book can get. I don't care how well a book is written or how fantastic the ideas are. If a book sits open at my gaming table almost every session, it's the best book period.

PH for the win. And I did read the question carefully, just like it said I should!:) :D

Yeah, I suppose since this is a popularity contest, the book with "wider appeal" should win. But "wider appeal" should not be confused with "good". PHBII of course has "wider appeal" than Race of Anything or the Complete Anything because PHBII covers everything. But I don't think it did it very well. Broad yes, all that good, no.
