2011 PC Bodycount Thread

Oh I forgot I killed off a PC towards the end of my 4E campaign over the summer. I had the BBEG in the fight "Dominate" the Dwarf Warlord and make him attack the Drow Rogue in the party who was already a bit beat up, the Warlord proceeded to use all his big powers that he had been saving for the right moment against the BBEG on the Rogue and rolled some massive criticals and crazy numbers to straight up kill the Rogue (something like 147 hit points after it was all said and done).

It was LEGEN --- wait for it --- DARY!

I have only 1 session this year, only half an hour long, but TWO character deaths

I recently bought the D&D Rules Cyclopedia to introduce my son to D&D. We rolled up a dwarf, a cleric, a thief, and a magic-user and he was very excited to start playing. Dusting off an old copy of B1 - In Search of the Unknown, after the very first encounter with the magic mouths I rolled a random encounter. 3 orcs walked around the corner to see what all the commotion was. In the ensuing battle both the dwarf and the thief were hacked to death, and it was only by the magic-user using his one spell (Sleep) that the other two survived. Now my son keeps asking when we can play again. :D

And the year ends with a pair of deaths:

Az-kabad the Dwarf died ten feet into the dungeon, falling into a pit and breaking his neck.

Helga the Cleric peaked around a tapestry only to have her head literally bitten off by a giant crab spider.

The Haunted Keep will not be denied blood!

The final count is in -- A grand total of 153 PC deaths were reported for 2011 in this thread. Of those 15 were from my table and 11 of those were from my bi-weekly Pathfinder dungeon exploration game.

Must have been some impressive at-wills. BTW, those are all dominate allows.

Sorry, I forgot to report the party in my game ending up with four out of five PCs dead on December 30th.

Evil game, which I knew would go badly at some point. The personalities have been coming to a head in the past month. They are all playing feudal lords holding and expanding lands in a barely settled edge of the country.

Early in the session, the highest ranking member, a count, decided not to accept the help of a group of fanatic shapeshifters because he was afraid that it would get out and the good characters would start showing up and killing the PCs. The other PCs pointed out that this will happen anyway, and a fierce roleplaying argument ensued.

Ultimately, the rest of the party offed the count. The named successor took over.

Two days later in game, the party has to fight some powerful creatures attacking the county. The party finishes off the two big bads and some NPCs troops are finishing off the cannon fodder. One PC was taken out by the big bads, but could still be saved by an item.

The Magus in the party decides now is the time to strike. (His sentient sword has been whispering in his ear that he should be in charge.) In one blow, he kills the badly wounded count. The PC downed by the big bads is not coming back now either. Then the Magus and the Antipaladin go toe-to-toe. It's a very close fight and when the Magus dies, the Antipaladin only has one hit point left.

He takes the crown, declares the county his, and we declare him winner of the game.

Lenea, high nosed elven element sorceress in a homebrew online campaign, served as a club to a half-giant fighter and didn't survive it. Neither did the half-giant, but the magic worked too late to save her.

The rest of the party managed to get her reincarnated. As a dwarf...

Actually the party had gotten a deck of many things and in the deck the Rogue picked a card that gave him a "secret enemy" which included party members. The Warlord wasn't really that friendly with the rogue to begin with and I told the Warlord as an aside that the Rogue was doing things underhandedly and that he was now upset with him and would try to kill him if given a chance. I had also dominated the Rogue in the fight to hit the Warlord a few times. This pissed off the Warlord even more because of his animosity towards the Rogue.

So when I dominated the Warlord he took his opportunity to unload everything that he had on the Rogue under the guise that he was dominated to do so, but in reality he was trying to off the Rogue by using powers other than At-Wills. It just took the little bit of coaxing on the part of "domination" to bring out the mean streak in the Warlord and have the Deck of Many things card come to fruition at the same time.

I felt it was an appropriate usage of the card and role-playing within the group. The characters didn't get along in the game that well anyhow even if the players did like each other, it was a pretty fun session and there wasn't any real threat of a TPK because of how powerful the characters were.

I have three more deaths to report in 2011. Rock the Fighter and John the Cleric were torn to shreds by camouflaged troglodytes. After returning to town to recruit some reinforcements, along with a discussion of the mortality of 1st level PCs, Fred the Cleric demonstrated the point by falling in the surprise round of his very first battle to another skulking troglodyte in the entrance halls of Quasqueton.
