But I agree. You can't have a game that is both low magic and high magic and keep a semblance of balance. Which is why I think WotC is wise for giving up on low magic and leaving that to 3pp.
You can

You just have to commit to them being different classes with various competencies.

Batman is an expert martial artist and detective but Superman is stronger

Sure. Cutting off ones nose to spites ones face, certainly is a level of reaction that can be taken.
That was a response to all the OS people who were bemoaning how gear was no longer in the hands of the DM and players were entitled for buying the necessary upgrades rather then keeping quirky fun stuff the DM gave. 5e opted for the magic items as gravy approach to satisfy that contingent of grognards.

Sure, once again though its a massive overreaction that had a net negative impact imo.

There's nothing overly fantastical, certainly not to the level of Wuxia or anything remotely like that, in the baseline Fighter, for many many levels.

Which is the point of contention here.

Some want a basic, 'mundane' Fighter. Heck, some want a Ranger that has no Spells! Others, want to be flying around based only on their somehow not-magic yet clearly magical abilities.

That circle cannot be squared.
The fighter at early levels can take a breath and heal themselves (Second Wind) or push themselves to temporarily act twice as often as their companions (Action Surge). Both being abilities that recharge after a set period of time. How is that not fantastical?
