Out of all the crpgs out there, BG2 is the one I have played the most. Heck, I recently reinstalled it onto my computer.
Why keep replaying it? Because it is fun, and because of the voice-acting.
Unlike most crpgs, which get boring for me on a replay, this game really draws me back in. There is a plot I can sink my fangs into, there are many different approaches to the same basic problem, based both on my own base class and the composition of my party, and there is a bad guy I can both understand and loathe. That is wonderful!
But more importantly, thanks to terrific voice-acting, I believe in these characters. Irenicus is not simply an Obstacle, but a BAD MAN (elf, whatever)! Minsc and Boo are, well, loveable! Jaheria really gets whiny and annoying, but also is so competent and has such juicy plots associated with her she is hard to put away, etc.
Most crpgs just strike me as a collection of obstacles. NWN is a classic example of this -- I never felt emotionally engaged by the plot, thus the nonsensical aspects really stood out, there was very little interaction with the people of the world (beyond Aribeth, and even that feels forced), and the whole this feels forced and linear.
Nope, the art may be old and substandard and the rules set was one I never liked, but as a crpg, BG2 still rocks.
And think of the number of people you can mention Giant Miniature Space Hamsters to and still get a giggle
So thanks for the new site, even if it offers nothing that I don't already know -- it is nice to know that the love is still there.
