You do see the flying skull. In combat you remain aware of everything that isn't hidden in a 360 around you. Basically, Garrick glanced over his shoulder while he was climbing.
But dude, sneak attack!
You can sneak either the skull lord or the flying skull. All you have to do is drop (free action) to the ground. Then you can move two squares to W8 or S8
W8 : You are out of sight of the flying skull
S8 : You are out of sight of the Skull Lord
Do a stealth check
Use deft strike to pop out 2 square in a a position with LOS and do a sneak attack against the appropriate monster.
you have -2 range vs SKull lord and -2 cover vs Flying skull but combat advantage negates that.
Either way you have a shot at doing more damage while not putting yourself in an akward spot. (.vs the flying skull, I'd throw the dagger instead of the shuriken for the sake of the +1 to hit). I know 2d6 isn't that much more damage than your sly flourish (+ cha), but on average it's 3 hp more (8 more on a crit) and staying back to the wall where your buddy defender is about to arrive is priceless. But you really need the backstabber feat to up your sneak dice to D8 for day 2.

I shouldn't advise players so extensively, but you wrote that you were new to rogues and I can't see you go another round without trying to get a sneak attack!
