The open door for the consulate guard was so obvious, as was Jack walking to the door of the consul's room. I mean, he's just cut the guy's finger off, and tortured him in other ways, and what's he expect to do? Walk out and say "hey guys, we're done talking now, see ya all later, I'm going to go save the world"? Instead, he overlooks the obvious and gets himself captured...just in time for CTU to send in a squad to rescue him next episode.

I'd personally think Jack thought himself to be Rambo at that moment and was intending to kill all the russians on the other side of the door with his bare hands. Unfortunately, once he opened the door I think he realized that he was rehashing the Day 4 plot so he decided to let himself be captured (because he didn't want to spend another year in Riverside working at on oil rig).

You know, from the very first second that the Russian Counsel picked up the cigar cutter I knew that Jack Bauer would be using it on the guy's fingers before the hour was up.

Probably the Russians have installed a "Protection from Jack Bauer" charm installed after the Chinese Embassy incident. And Jack rolled his natural one of his Will Save (the only time he could actually fail any will save) to resist the charm at the most inopportune moment... If he hadn't failed, he would have shot the guards through the door and ran off.

I definitely think this was a good episode, even ignoring its "dramatic" mistakes. :)

But anyway, speaking of bad plots: The whole Palmer assassination plot was pretty stupid, too. I would have worked with Lennox on their side, but the moment he went against them, they should have called off. There were to many mistakes in the whole story - The only reason why their "stupidity" didn't work against them is because the other characters also reacted stupid - ignoring Lennox warning, unable to become sceptic about the shifty excuses of Lennox assistent and so on...

But ultimately Lennox comes out of this in a perfect position. He tried to stop Reed and Co. from killing the President (after giving the itinerary), but the President is out of the way and he can still get his Act adopted through the VP.

BTW, they really screwed up the whole part of the VP taking the responsibilites of the President. It is not automatic, or "assumed" he is in charge as the SecDef stated. The Cabinet has to declare the President to be unable to serve and submit this to the President Pro Temp in the Senate. Until then, the VP has no additional powers.

But that's assuming that the constitutional law hasn't been rewritten prior to the David Palmer's ascension to the presidency. Afterall, didn't the same thing basically happened twice during the previous seasons? once when David Palmer was president the other time when Logan was vice president.

My recollection is that at least when Keeler was shot down in Air Force One, the cabinet did vote to make Logan the acting President. I suppose it is possible that the Constitution could have been amended since in the show, but I find that unlikely, especially in the aftermath of Logan's conspiracy and arrest.
