27 Continuous Years - First Character Death

So, in last Sunday's game my extremely cautious brother lost his first playing character! His Lawful Good cleric Timothy, a founding character from our first game back in 1982! This is our 150th module, and he's probably played Timothy in one-quarter to one-third of them.

It's probably just temporary though, as it is a time-travel module they are in. We continue to use AD&D 1st Edition rules, but I am using an old 1980's "Timemaster" module for this particular adventure. The playing characters were recruited by the Time Police to go back to King Arthur's time and keep time-altering Demorians from changing things. So in game 12 of this module Timothy has been sent alone to accompany Sir Lancelot safely back to Camelot while the other playing characters watch and protect Merlin and Arthur.

The Demorians struck, ambushing Lancelot with a Dragon obtained from a parallel world. It is a Green Dragon, and Timothy wears scale mail made from a green dragon that would normally fully protects him from a green dragon's breath weapon, so he charges forward to protect Lancelot. But that's the beauty of using a module from a different game system - the breath weapon specified is Fire not Methane. I rule that since it isn't the same AD&D type dragon the armor only has an 80% chance of working.....and then roll a 96%. Timothy gets blasted for 85% of his hit points and fails his save.

The Demorians then all fire their disruptors into him, killing him, while the dragon simultaneoulsy kills Sir. Lancelot. In the single round between the dragon and Demorian attack the slagged and stunned Timothy wisely activated a visual communication device, alerting the others as to what happened. They are debating now using time travel to reverse this - but more so to save Lancelot (and the overall mission) than Timothy.

How do your game work? Players are from our time, like the Avatar on Ultima? Or they come from some Fantasy temporal nexus?

Actually, they are from their own traditional D&D world. Of the 150 modules we've run this is only the second time they've been recruited by the Time Police to fix Earth's history. They did travel to 20th century Earth through a vortex on three previous occassions over the group's 27 year history, and one of the Playing Characters is from there (a hippie, originally from 1967, who is now a high-level druid).
