2E Preview Booklet

I like to collect old rpg-related posters, books and things. For example, I recently ran across some old copies of the 2E world conspectus (Ravenloft, Birthright, Planescape, Dark Sun & Forgotten Realms) I'd put away in an old filing cabinet.

That got me wondering if I had saved the 2E preview book that foreshadowed the release of the 2E game. I've seen some pictures the cover on the internet, but I can't find a copy - I'd prefer a PDF, if one exists. I've tried also searching on e-bay, but no hits. If anyone could point me to a copy, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Above and beyond that, does anybody here keep and/or collect things associated with RPGs, such as old catalogs, previews, posters, and the like? If so, what is the most unusual or prized item you have?

I have a cardboard cutout of Regdar. Yes, that Regdar. Great conversation piece.

I have a bunch of the D&D Choose-Your-Own-Adventures.

Speaking of which, My uncle had a Pillars of Pentegarn puzzle. My grandma assembled it and glued it - it hangs proudly on my wall.

Beyond those, My 1e/2e book collection is fairly strong, considering I've only been playing/collecting for about ten years (I've never played them - though I know I should). My Unearthed Arcana is in spectacular condition, which I've heard is a bit of a feat.

All this while keeping a fairly nice 3e/Pathfinder collection and a near-complete 4e library...

I pick up what comes my way. It's worked out well so far.

TSR Catalogs, 1990-1996, and scattered WotC catalogs from 1998 onward.
A Dragonlance: Fifth Age bookshelf marker signed by several design team members (it was included in a chat room prize package Stan! sent me)
An electronic copy of the Dragonlance: Fifth Age style guide
The four promo cards for the Marvel SAGA Fate Deck
Several copies of the Dragonlance and Ravenloft Conspectuses.

And if the PDF attachment doesn't work, WotC's hosting the 2E Preview right here.

Ah! Absolutely perfect! Many, many thanks!!!

(er, how do I give XP?)

I love those old endless quest books; I used to have the Dungeon of Dread (the one with the water weird on the cover) and the Revenge of the Rainbow Dragons. I also had one for Gamma World, but I forget the name of it...

I also enjoy pulling out those TSR preview catalogs that can be found in the old boxed sets. It's a nice trip down memory lane to remember what was coming out when.

I think my most prized sideline item is the Birthright Conspectus - the map on the inside is perfect for use with the Birthright board game. Or the cloth map that came with the original Dark Sun boxed set.

The Queen of Spiders module was a major find. But then I suspect my collecting of vintage gaming is more casual than most. :-S

I used to own a cardboard stand-up of Regdar, but it now stands watch over my cousin's son's basement.

A few of the random things I've acquired since working at WotC:
  • A copy of the Star Frontiers supplement Zebulon's Guide, with typed notes from the author on errata and other proposed changes for a second printing.
  • The original paint masters for a number of D&D Chainmail miniatures, the ones they used for photographing the datacards and dioramas.
  • Playtest drafts of the 3e core rulebooks.
  • A Games Workshop umber hulk miniature still in the blister.
  • The limited edition Christmas D&D miniatures from the past few years.
  • Painted minis featured in the 2e BattleSystem and BattleSystem Skirmishes books.

I'm pretty sure people who worked at WotC longer or at TSR have much more interesting stashes of stuff. I got in late, after a lot of the game library had walked away. When we moved to the new building a few years ago, the game library underwent a final purge.

I don't mean to threadjack, but can you explain this awesome graphic? Is this just a pic made by Gygax or a friend, or were these put out on the webs somewhere?

//end that

The 2e preview is very nostalgic and reminds me of my middle school years (I downloaded it before it was taken offline). Its a little disheartening to see how they hyped up the previous (1st) edition, while also advertising for 2e. I don't remember that same level of respect during the rollouts of 3.X or 4e.

All that said, I'm a 4e player and DM through and through, but I do see some flaws with the system and its r&d and initial delivery.
