How compatible are the 3.0 rules with the following:

1. Unearthed Arcana (WOTC)
2. Complete *** (WOTC)
3. Grim Tales (Bad Axe)

They're all pretty well compatible. I have no idea what Grim Tales is, so I can't help you there... but the rest are probably ok.

I can't let this go without saying that I really think that 3.5 is way way better than 3.0. At the very least, use the classes from 3.5... they totally fixed the bard, ranger, and monk, and did some necessary tweakage to the paladin and fighter (though not enough IMO).

Anyway... since the major changes in 3.5 were to rebalance the classes and fix some of the spells... I think most of those supplements will be fine with 3.0...

Everyone says that about the ranger. I even asked what they had changed in another thread. I can see how the ranger may be a bit better now, but I never really had a problem with it before. Why does everyone think 3.0 rangers are so bad?

I never played a monk (though I have wanted to) so I can't comment on that, and I despise bards, so I wouldn't have noticed with them.

This is exactly what my group is doing, playing with 3.0 rules and a selection of stuff out of Unearthed Arcana (Prestigious Classes, specialist wizard variants, complex skill checks, etc.)

It's working perfectly fine. Had to make one tweak to the Prestige Ranger prerequisites since they assume the one feat for two-weapon fighting.

We much prefer the 3.0 rules to 3.5. There were some worthwhile 3.5 rules changes, but they're far overshadowed by the massive, unnecessary changes to the spell lists. http://superdan.net.home.comcast.net/down3-5.html

3.0 rangers were front loaded. This is the major reason the class was changed with 3.5. In 3.0 it was extremely common to take a single level of ranger to gain the two weapon abilities, etc. and then switch classes for other abilities.

What 3.5 did was try to have all of the classes gain something class-wise as they gained levels so that there was some incentive to take multiple levels in a class.

The 3.5 ranger gave the class more ownership and tailoring, it allowed the archery focus which many people thought was extremely appropriate for the class as opposed to soley being a two weapon combatant.

I use all books interchangeably. I use the 3.5 update pdf and it all works out. I also use the material that I find in Dragon Magazine and use the pdf to help me update the articles that were released as 3.0 material. I must say, they [DnD 3.0 and Dnd 3.5] are quite interchangeable, and require hardly any effort, if any, to use together.
