3.5 Call Lightning

I know, silly me. Part of it is I hate the Feat in question. The only time I have ever seen someone have intererst in Energy Substitution was to use it to convert attacks into Sonic attacks.

They only did this of course because sonic resistance is the rarest resistance for monsters to have.

I've heard this particular complaint about Energy Conversion before. It is quite powerfull as long as your opponent is not protected by a silence spell...

...And silence isn't *that* high a level.

Energy Conversion works becuase you're not calling down lightning from the sky, you're aprantly creating it and causing it to strike vertically for the time. So, yeah, you can have a bolt of acid or a bolt of sonic energy.

Meh. Sonic attacks can be defended against with a silence spell, a bard, lots of stuff. :)

In such an instance, the appropriate reaction is to run!

Even peasants know that lightning doesn't strike like that.

except that from the looks of the wording, you can just fly after them in your little birdie form and keep the bolts coming...

The sheer intimidation power of this spell is lovely...

I would also like to take this opportunity to  at anyone comparing single actions of this spell to casting several of a higher level spell... don't you people ever run out of spells?

Cast this spell. cast shilliglah (sp). Take all the time you want to sneak up, negotiate, ambush or whatever. You are still set for an encounter (or two) with two spells.

as it was completely up to the DM whether or not the weather would cooperate with you enough to use your prepared 3rd level spell.

*grin* This was why in one campaign I played in, this spell got known as the "good weather"spell. As long as you had it memorized, you were assured of nice sunny days without a cloud in the sky.

Another option with the 3.0 call lightning is to use a weather eye spell once per week to determine when appropriate weather's coming, then just prepare call lightning on those days.

Just a quick reference where is "weather eye"?

What fun as a player of a druid or a DM running one...

Cast call lightning (duration 1 minute per level). Wildshape into a bird indiginous to he area. Fly to a high, well camouflaged vantage point.

Start raining bolts down on the enemy encampment below.

Good luck to the enemies figuring out where the bolts are coming from !!!! Aside from, you know, looking up and saying "uh, they come from that cloud way up there).

*grin*

YOINK!:D

I can imagine a cadre of evil druids getting together and each of them casting this spell, then going into town to wreak havoc, just for fun. Kind of like The Birds but with LIGHTNING!:D
