3.5 Cohorts

Does anyone know of any hard and fast rules for cohorts in 3.5 that are similar to those in 4e? I'm aware of the leadership feat and the cohort mechanics.

I'm really looking for something simple to to add some numbers to my player's group. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

So... you want 3.5 cohort game rule information that is similar to that of 4th edition? Or do you want it FOR 4th edition? Or both?

Have them become mentors and gain apprentices as per DMG II.

What about hirelings?

What is the purpose of adding the numbers to your players' group? More swords? If so, hirelings are the way to go.

I'm looking to add a few fighter type cohorts because there are only three in the party and no one likes playing tank type characters. The apprentice idea looks like it could be promising. Thanks for the tip.
