I like the DR x/strong magic from jdsugden. I also think I may try DR x/artifact (ie. delericho's suggestion). The other alternative is to keep DR x/+y, as IndyPendant said or use DR x/- as suggested by several others.

You could avoid inventing new types of damage reduction just by making it DR x/Epic.

What's interesting is that Monte Cook disliked the removal of DR x/+y. However, it wasn't to make monster's tougher. It was because it meant that weapons above a +1 bonus are overcosted (why have an increasing scale if a +2 weapon only has an additional +1 to hit & damage).

Yeah I found that line of reasoning to be a bit off; I mean the CR of these creatures assume that you do _not_ have the appropriate quality and flat enhancement helps the wielder to overcome _any_ DR...

Couple this with the revised Power attack (which includes the longsword in 2 hands) where you can favourably convert 1:2, I'd think that enhancement has grown in value.

Didn't the GMW spell duration get cut as well?

The sick, twisted individual in me just envisioned a monster with a high DR but an allergy to peanuts, and the assassin of the party smearing peanut butter on his dagger before the sneak attack...

Errrr . . . DR/Strong Magic would be reasonable for a 11th or 12th level party. DR/Artifact would be pretty cheesy, as you'd actually have to give them an artifact and it's not like you'd be giving one to every member of the party, right?

Remember, the special material after the / is what is needed to bypass the DR. You can beat him with a wet noodle if you can overcome the DR amount.

so if someone were 20/artifact, you just need to hit for more than 20, you don't need the artifact.

Another option is to keep the + requirements from 3.0 monsters when applied to 3.5 monsters with DR/Magic. This gives benefits to higher + items and buffing spells while also keeping materials relevant.
