True.

I've found DR 5/x works fine until level 8 or so,
DR10/x works great until level 15, and
DR 15/x should be reserved for the *really* big bads over CR 16.

Bearing in mind that you decide what the effects look like, have you considered giving the monster Rgeneration x or Fast healing x instead. This often seems, from the point of view of the players to be similar to X/something.

If you are feeling really nasty, then make it both DR and Fast healing.

Bah! My +1 Anarchic, Holy, Cold Iron Morningstar beats all of that, plus DR 15/Piercing! :p
 

One material I use on some of my homebrew critters is DR x/wood with the proviso that the striking portion of the weapon has to be made from wood. The steel axehead does no good; have to use the wooden axehaft as an improvised club.

+1 Holy Cold Iron Bastard Sword

+1 Wounding Silver Bastard Sword

Well, I added a new type of DR to my game that seems to work nicely: Strong Magic. The weapon must be +3 to get past the DR of creatures with strong maic DR. If is useful when the PCs are levels 5 to 11, where they can't just cast Greater Magic Weapon - so some PCs will have the ability to bypass DR, and others will not. That is the situation you want with DR - having it be effective at times and bypassed at other times.
