D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 Magic Item Question

OK, I need to verify something.

A Mwk Longsword is 315gp (15gp sword + 300 Mwk cost).
- I add +1 for 2000gp (bonus squared x 2000gp)
Total cost is 2315gp.

If I want to add flaming to the sword, a +1 value, it would be an "effective" +2 weapon, therefore total cost would jump 8000gp (2x2x2000), bringing total to 8315gp right?

I would need to cough up 6000gp to a smith to upgrade this right?

I couldn't find detailed rules on upgrading items that were already magical for some reason.

Thanks in advance :D

Right, you'd only need to pay 6000gp. When adding enchantments (or +'s) you pay the difference between what you want, and what you already have.

Rules should be near the back of the DMG and I think the Magic Item Compendium has magic item creation rules in it as well.

Incorrect. The cost actually jumps to 10315. (300 for MW, 2000 for +1, 8000 for flaming.) If you have a +1 sword you only pay 8000 gp to upgrade it.

No, I believe you are incorrect.
"Magic Item Compendium, pg 233;
Improving Magic Items
You can add new magical abilities to a magic item with virtually no restrictions. The cost and prerequisites to do this are the same as if the item was not magical. Thus, a +1 longsword can be made into a +2 vorpal longsword, with the cost to create it being equal to that of a +2 vorpal longsword minus the cost of a +1 longsword (98,315 - 2,315 = 96,000gp). The character improving the magic item must meet the same prerequisites as if he were creating the item from scratch."

laymans terms being you pay the difference between what your weapon IS and what you want it to BE.
Says it right there, a +2 vorpal longsword (overall a +7 enchantment) cost 98000 for +7, +315 for the masterwork longsword = 98315. Now if you blade is already a +1 you'd subtract the 2315 from the 98000 to make it +7, meaning you'd only pay 96000.
You're not gonna pay 10000gp for a +2 weapon.
If you add the value worth of each enchantment bonus on top of themselves (2000, 8000, 18000, 32000...) you're ripping yourself or your players off....
