[3.5] Narrative instead of Miniature based games

I've been playing for years with out minis and the couple of times we tried to use them we found that they detracted from the Role play aspect and put too much focuse on the Roll one.

Thats kind of the consensus of my group, we enjoy miniatures and scenery, but we enjoy using our imagination more. My players have stated in the past that they have a lot more trouble being scared of a 4" tall dragon than they do of a dragon they imagine in their heads.

In the end, we'll use a combination of both techniques. When we want to play with miniatures, I'll set up the Dwarven Forge stuff I spent so much money on. When we want to relax and roleplay, I'll use the graph paper behind the DMs screen and do all of the work to make it a seamless narrative combat for my players.

Just in case you are interested, someone produced some OGC rules called "snap" for Simple Narrative Action Plugin. Simple rules to support a more narrative form of combat.

The version below is 0.6. They have produced a 0.7 version but that basically got rid of all the interesting stuff.

Cheers

I've found that when I use graph paper and pushpins, or a battlemat with counters, it doesn't really interfere with the mental image too much. Painted miniatures, on the other hand, do, because you start getting the image of the miniatures in your head instead of what you otherwise would. But maybe that's just me.

Hi;
I think anything that works for you and your group is the right method. In the end it's all about wether your adaptation of the rules results in more or less fun for the campaign.
I personally like using miniatures for the sake of range and attacks of opportunity etc. But I don't like the direction 3.5 is heading. Miniatures should simply be a minor ingredient for those who like that method.
I am going to stick with the 3.0 approach to miniatures as much as possible since I feel it is a better compromise between game mechanics and the good old fashioned fun factor in the core of D&D.

Happy Gaming;)
