As a low-level druid my marquee weapon was the longspear - with a low AC anyway, the weapon's 10' reach helped me fight from the second rank and still be useful for aiding the fighters.
No Longer an option... if you are in 3.5 anyway.

Consider a club or Quarterstaff, and use:
Shillelagh
Transmutation
Level: Drd 1
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: One touched nonmagical oak club or quarterstaff
Duration: 1 min./level
Saving Throw: Will negates (object)
Spell Resistance: Yes (object)
Your own nonmagical club or quarterstaff becomes a weapon with a +1 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls. (A
quarterstaff gains this enhancement for both ends of the weapon.) It deals damage as if it were two size categories larger (a
Small club or quarterstaff so transmuted deals 1d8 points of damage, a Medium 2d6, and a Large 3d6), +1 for its
enhancement bonus. These effects only occur when the weapon is wielded by you. If you do not wield it, the weapon behaves
as if unaffected by this spell.
YMMV

Why is the longspear no longer an option???
Some kind of book told me...

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Druids are proficient with the following weapons: club, dagger, dart, quarterstaff,
scimitar, sickle, shortspear, sling, and spear. They are also proficient with all natural attacks (claw, bite, and so forth) of any
form they assume with wild shape (see below).

Back to the whole Druid Build thing...

Consider a Gnome Druid, w/ a Riding Dog are your companion... @ 20th, your mount would be 15HD, before buffing, awakening etc.

YMMV

IIRC, Awaken no longer works on the druid's animal companion, because it is considered a magical beast. This negates Animal Growth and Speak with Animals on the companion as well  . Stupid ruling, worth to be house-ruled, IMHO.

The PhB contradicts itself, referring to animal companions as animals in some places and as magical beasts in other places. Word on the street is, Andy Collins confessed this was a cut-and-paste error from the rules for familiars, and animal companions should properly be considered animals; the forthcoming errata will clarify this and remove the contradiction. If your DM gives you smack about it, open the PhB to the druid section and point to all the references to an animal companion's being an animal.
