3.5 or 4th edition?

I'm in my late 30's and my group has played all of the editions. I love them all with the exception of 4th. We played it for several months but I just found the combat more aggravating than anything. It felt very video gamish to me with the special moves and all. As a DM it was also hard to keep track of each monsters powers etc.. I know a lot of people love 4E, but not me, so to each his own I guess. Now every edition has its flaws but thats why we have DM's,to make the overall rule. I'm sure 5E is in the works...lol. I just remember it was going to be streamlined, but were up to players handbook 3 now, right? DM's guide 2 (which I dont think has any real good DM info compared to the earlier editions) It's just my opinion, but I'm just not as excited about it as I was about AD&D. If I had to choose between 3rd and 4E I'd go with 3.5 myself.

Personally I play OD&D and AD&D. I'd play and run Pathfinder any day. I'd play 4e with the right people, since for me people trump systems every time. I wouldn't run it myself, however. Now, I'm puzzled about the Essentials line. I'm in a wait-and-see mode, but if Wizards indeed is coming back on its drastic changes to the game a little bit, I might be willing to check it out.

Bah, sucker-punches are for amateurs. Here's what I rely on:

D&D 3.5 is great for beginners.

Why? Because at lower levels, with a limited amount of extra books, the game is quite balanced and very very funny. It stops beeing so funny when you reach higher levels, and when players start to master the system. When they do, running a game as a DM becomes very very unfun, as your monsters, especially your BBEG will have a bad time against PCs and will go down in a single round... except when you build it specially against the PCs.

I can´t say a lot about 4e here...

You know, criticism is not inherently un-civil. He stated that he did not like 4E, and why. He didn't attack people who did, or otherwise engage in trolling or other negative behavior. If anything, you did so by deciding to label anyone who articulates their preferences as un-civil.

Here's How You Decide on Which Edition to Run...

You need to make an opposed check for each edition.

1. Roll d20 (1d20 + the # of 4e supporters in your group + the modifers on the chart below = the DC of 4e.)
2. Roll another d20 (1d20 + the # of 3.5e supporters in your group + modifers on the chart below = the result of 3.5e).
3. If the result is greater than the DC of 4e, then you play 3.5e. If the result is lesser than the DC of 4e, you play 4e. Re-roll all ties.
4. A "Natural 20" always succeeds, regardless of modifiers (in the case of 4e)
5. A "Natural 20" for 3.5e also succeeds, but if another "Natural 20" is rolled the 3.5e players may upgrade to Pathfinder!
6. A "Natural 1" always looses, regardless of modifiers.

Modifiers
+1 to +10 for bribes (you decided on how many points each bribe is worth)
+2 if a player can bring something "extra" to the table to aid your DMing (Cool minis, a battlemat, books already purchased for a given edition)
+4 if you are DMing at a player's home
-1 per gripe or complaint from any player about either edition (this is cumulative)
-2 per player known to have "attendance" issues"
-4 per player who is "rules lawyer"
-1 to -10 per player requesting bribes from you--depending on the nature of the bribe.
