D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5 Paladin] Detect Evil now a spell?

In 3.0, it stated the Paladin could Detect Evil and use the ability to duplicate the effects of the Detect Evil spell.

In 3.5 it states: "Detect Evil(Sp): At will, a paladin can detect evil, as the spell."

Does this mean the Paladin now has to cast a spell to detect evil? Or does this still mean she can just concentrate as before?

It's the same thing - it's a spell-like ability usable at will in both cases.

"As the spell" just means that the wording of the spelllike ability is the same as the wizards spell.
