I don't undertsand how anyone can have a problem with knowing too many instruments or performance styles in 3.0 - no one forces you to choose that many styles. If you just want to be able to play a flute really well, don't choose 9 other styles and get those 10 ranks anway.

Or pick 9 variations of "flute".

Either serious variations (I'm sure someone that knows about flutes can come up with variant flutes and variant playing styles -- if "melody", "ballad", "epic", "poetry", "singing", "comedy", and "storytelling" are all valid styles, then you can wring some more out of just "flute") or not so serious (plain flute, pan flute, extra crispy flute, upside-down flute, underwater flute, annoying flute, charming flute, piercing flute, flute-of-gold, and the extremely rare rock-'n-roll flute).
